Be it known that I, Gnonon FLnssA, a. citizen of the United States, and a resident of Berkeley. in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Button Snap-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates generally to snap fasteners, and more particularly snap fasteners of substantially button shape, my object being the provision of a fastener which may be utilized Without detriment as to either appearance or usefulness when either exposed or concealed, and one capable of presentation in the several forms to be hereinafter described for use in connection with light, medium. and heavy goods, and of simple or elaborated design.

Referring now to these figures, and particularly to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, my invention in its simplest form contemplates the provision of a pair of button-shaped engaging members 10 and 11. each having a series of openings 12 extending around its axis, the body of the member 10, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, being substantially concaveconvex, and the body of the member 11 having its outer portion in the form of an angular annular flange 13. The member 10 also has a peripheral rib 14 around its edge at its concaved siderand is provided with radial slots 15 extending through its periphery and through the said rib 1 1, fromits apertures 12, so as to form between the apertures 12 and slots 15 a series of spring tongues engageable with the peripheral edge of the flange 13 of the member 11 when the two members are pressed together to force the peripheral edge of the member 11 within the rib 1 1-, the tendency of which is to flatten the member 10. as seen in Fig. 4, so that its natural springiness will hold the members in engaged relation.
As seen in Figs. 5 and 6, the slotted engaging member 16 is similar to the member 10 shown in Figs. 1 and2, though disposed within an annularlyflanged protecting plate 17, and secured to the plate by an axial rivet or other fastening member 18, the prot'ecting plate 17 having thread openings 19 alining with thread openings 20 of the engaging member 16. i
As seen in Figs. 7 and 8 the companion engaging member 21 for the member 16 shown in Figs. 5 and 6, may have an outer rib 22, by which it may be more readily engaged by the fingers for disengagement from the member 16 before the two engaging members of the clasp are sewed to the r portions of the garment in connection with which they are to be used.
Asthus far described, the members 10 and 16 of the two forms generallycorrespond to the socket portions of theusual engaging member 23 and its peripheral ties 25 at the outer ends of the radiating arm 26 of a spring member 27, secured to the outer face of the engaging member 23 by an axialrivct or like fastening member 28, the said bent engaging extremity 2 5 013 the spring arm thus projecting at the inner face of the member 23 to receive the companion engaging member 29, as seen in Fig. 11,.Which may be like either of the members 11 and 21 before described, the said'bent extremity- 25 being turned inwardly as seen in Figs. 10 and 12, or outwardly as in Fig. 11.
' As seen in the form of the invention shown in Figs. 13 to 16 inclusive, one of the engaging members 30, see Fig. 13, may have a central stud 31 for engagement through the enlarged central opening 32 of the companion engaging member 33, see Fig. 14, the stud 31 being provided with a laterally offset engaging head 34 whereby, upon its projection through the opening 32 and upon relative shifting movement of the two members 30 and 33 laterally with respect to one another, it will engage the member 33 at one side of the opening 32, to hold the members in connected relation, a spring 35, seen in Fig. 15, being connected to the member 30 and projecting along the stud 31, so as to bear against that portion of the member 33 at one side of its opening 32, and normally hold these two engaging members in the laterally shifted engaged position, shown in Fig.15. The spring 36 of'Fig. 16is upset and drawn out of the material of the member 30 instead of being attached thereto, as in Fig."15.- According to the form of the invention shown, in Figs. 17 to 20 inclusive, the stud 37' with its laterally offset hook or head may be rotatably connected to the member 38 carrying the same by connection to a diametrically projecting handle 39 rotatable in a bearing in the member 38, as seen in Figs; 17 and'QO, with angular extensions 40 at its opposite ends whereby it may be grasped to'shift' thestud' 37 out of engagement "with the companion engaging member 41, and against the tension of the spring -12, the companion member 41 of which f rm may be apertured at 41* within a countersunk central portion 43 to receive the stud 37, so that the head of the stud will, in the engaged position, project little if any beyond the outer surface of the member 41.
It is obvious from the several forms of the invention as thus described, my invention provides for button-shaped engaging -members which from the simplest to the most elaborate of the forms shown and described have relatively engaging spring con goods, for which purpose judicious choice of the several forms should be made. the
.form shown in Figs. 1 to 4-, for instance, in
connection with light goods; the form shown in Figs. 9 to 12 inclusive, for medium goods, and the forms shown in Figs. 13 to 20 for heavy goods.
It is further obvious that my invention provides snap fasteners generally of the shape of buttons, in which the spring controlling means is in each instance well protected, as for instance against irons in pressing garments in connection with which the fasteners are utilized, and which may be utilized either concealed or exposed without detriment either in the appearance of the garments in connection with which they are utilized, or efficiency of the fasteners themselves.
It is obvious that the type of button in Figs. 1 to S inclusive, permits the stamping of each part from a single piece of material, requiring no springs whatsoever, and that as the closing device acts entirely around the button, a strong hold is assured, and a button of very small size may be made practical and eflicient.
In the type of button shown in Figs. 9 and 10, a spring is provided which renders the button adaptable to a variety of materials and is, at the same time, well protected by the adjacent portions of the button against injury when the garment is laundried.
The type of button of Figs. 13 to 16 inclusive, requires a slight pull to displace one part with respect to the other in a lateral direction in opening the button as is obvious, and to render this displacement ready and easy, the button should be properly sewed on. To act as a guard, the button may have a knob 30 at one side so as to lie adjacent a garment seam for instance, and permit of proper alinement of the buttons of a series. This latter type, as well as the button seen in Figs. 17 to 20 inclusive, is for heavy materials, and its parts may be either upon the under or upper surfaces of the garment or between layers of the material thereof, it being obvious that when the parts are secured upon the under surface or between layers, the stud must necessarily be longer than when secured upon the upper surfaces of the garment.
I claim:
1. A snap fastener comprising a pair of button-shaped engaging members, one of which has an opening, a stud carried by the other member to extend through said opening, and having a laterally offset engaging head, and a spring adjacent the stud acting to normally shift the same laterally in the opening to engaged position.
2. A snap fastener comprising a pair of button-shaped engaging members, one of which has an opening, a stud carried by the other member to extend through said opening, and having a laterally offset engaging head, and a spring disposed at one side of the stud to bear against the first member at one side of its opening, whereby to shift the stud laterally in the opening to engaged position.
3. A snap fastener comprising a pair of engaging members, one of which has an opening, a stud pivotally connected to the other member to extend through said opening and having an engaging head, and a spring bearing against the said stud to normally hold the same in engaged position.
4. A snap fastener comprising a pair of button-shaped engaging members, one of which has an opening, a stud carried by the other member to extend through said opening and having a laterally offset engaging head, and a spring adjacent the stud acting to normally shift the same laterally in the opening to engaged position, said stud being ivotally connected to its respective engaging member and controlled by the said spring.
5. A snap fastener comprising a pair of engaging members, one of which has an opening, a stud pivotally connected to the other member to extend through said open ing and having an engaging head, a spring bearing against the said stud to normally hold the same in engaged position, and a diametrically projecting handle rotatably supported by said last-named member, to which the stud is connected.
6. A snap fastener comprising a pair of engaging members one of which has an open ing, a diametrically projecting handle member carried by the other of said engaging members and having angular ends, a stud connected to and movable with said handle member to extend through the said opening, and provided with an engaging head, and a spring bearing against said stud for the purpose described.
