To all whom it may concern:
1 3e it knownthat I, HANs'P fL nsn-N, a citizen of the United- States, residing at' Portland, in the county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have'invented new and'useful Improvements in .lVrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a wrench and has as its principal object the provision ofsimple, cheap, and efiicient means whereby the movable jaw of the wrench maybe adjusted;
withrelation to the head of the'same.
A second object of'my invention'is to provide convenient means whereby a pipe wrench may be changed for use asa monkey wrench;

Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 is the handle of a wrench on which is a shank 2, said shank being provided with two sets of ratchet teeth 3. At the end of the shank 2 opposite the handle 1 is a head or fixed jaw a which extends transversely of the shank 2 in the manner common to monkey wrenches. Slidably mounted on the shank 2 is a movable jaw 5, the jaw 5 being provided with teeth such as 6, which are adapted to engage with the teeth 3 to hold the jaw 5 in fixed relation to the shank 2'- when the jaw 5 is forced so as to bring the teeth 6 strongly against the teeth 3. Means for accompanying a relative movement of the jaw 5 with relation to the shank 2 to cause the engagement of the teeth 3 and 6 will be described below.
On one side of the shank 2, opposite the teeth 3,'the jaws 4: and 5 are provided with gripping teeth such as 7 in order that the wrench may be used as a pipe wrench, but
in order to use thewrench also asa: monkey. wrench I. provide a pair of? shields 8 and 9v for the jaws 4 and 5 respectively, the shields,
8 and 9 each 'being'of a channel formation closed at one end so as to fit over the-portions of the jaws 4L and 5having the teeth 'Tthereon, the closed ends of the shields 8 and 9 I contacting against the outer ends of the j aws at and. 5 as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and ,2.. 'Moreover, thfe wiping faces ofthe jaws land 5 are recessed as shown at 10fand 11, while a the outer ends of the jaws fl and'5 are rocessed as shownat 12" and 13 respectively, and Ipr'ovide pins 14: and 15 for the; shields B and 9 respectively 'which'eXtend through the shields from one side to the other and .are adapted to seat in the recesses 10 and 11 respectively so as to prevent the shields 8 and 9 from'slipping longitudinally of the jaws 4 and 5. I also provide set screws 16and 171 which extend-through the closed ends of the shields 8 and 9 and seat in the.
recesses 1 2.and 13 intheouterends of the jaws 4; and 5 for thejpurposeof pressing the pins 1% and 15 against-the outer edgesof the recesseslO andll so as to position theshields 8 and 9'securely and also for the purpose of preventing the canopy of the shields 8 and 9 fromslipping in a direction longitudinally ofthe shank 2.
Referring again to the construction of the movable jaw 5 and the means of clamping the same to the shank 2, it will be seen that the head 5 has a recess 18 therein which is bounded on the side opposite the teeth 3 by an inclined face 19 adapted to cooperate with a wedge 20 for the purpose of drawing the member 21 against the teeth 3, the member 21 having the teeth 6 previously mentioned. It will be seen, moreover, that the face of the shank 2 is screwed as shown at 22 intermediate the two sets of teeth 3 and the member 21 is provided with recesses such as 23 in which are springs 24 for the purpose of drawing the member 21 back from the shank so as to disengage the teeth 6 from the teeth 3 whenever the position of the wedge member 20 permits this to be done. It will be seen also that I provide pin 25 in the recess 23 for guiding the springs and holding them in place. Now the member 5 carries on one side thereof a plate 26, the right hand end of which is broken away in Fig. 1, and pivoted on the plate 26 is a short shaft -27 which has at its inner end an arm 28 and at its outer end a handle or lever arm 29. It will be seen that the arm 28 carries a pin which passes into a recess in the member 20 so that by wedging the handle 29, the Wedge member 20 can be drawn from the full line position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1 in order to release the engagement between teeth 3 and 6 by means of the spring 23, so as to permit the shifting of the head 5 to a new position when desired, the head being again clamped in the new position by bringing the handle 29 back to the position shown in Fig. l.
It will be understood that the inner face of the plate 26 is recessed in order to provide room for the arm 28 so that it can move as required, and it will be understood further that the plate 26 is recessed on its inner side as shown at 30 to provide space in which the arm 28 can move as described and it will be understood further that the plate 26 may be fastened to the movable jaw or head 5' by any suitable means, such as the screw 31.
It will be seen, also, that the movable head 5 is slotted as at 32 and that toothed member 21 has a lug, or projection 33 thereon which extends into the slot 32 so as to prevent the springs 23 from throwing member 21 too far away from shank 2 when the wedge 20 is lifted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A wrench comprising in a combination shank having ratchet teeth thereon a mov-j able jaw slidably mounted on said shank, a tooth member adapted to cooperate w1th the teeth on said shankfor fixing the position of said movable jaw, a wedge carried by said movable jaw for throwing said tooth member into position to fix the movable jaw, said Wedge being mounted to move in a line parallel to said shank, a bell lever mounted on said movable jaw, one portion of said bell lever serving as a handle and the other portion of said bell lever being connected to said wedge to move the same, said handle portion of the bell lever laying substantially parallel with the shank of the wrench when said tooth member is in the gripping position, and spring means for throwing said tooth member away from said shank when said tooth member is released by said wedge.
2. A combination wrench comprising in combination fixed and movable jaws having gripping teeth thereon, shield members for covering said teeth when desired, said jaws having sockets extending inwardly from the faces on which said teeth are provided, said jaws having also front faces extending substantially at right angles to the surfaces provided with said teeth, said front faces having recesses therein, pins carried by said shield members for contacting with the front faces of the said first mentioned sockets to resist forward sliding of said shield member, and screws carried by said shield members and seating in said recesses in said front faces, said screws exerting pressure perpendicular to said front faces whereby said shield members are held against movement rearwardly of said jaws and also against movement parallel to said shank.
