M. H. MOORMAN. SEPARABLE RIGID HEAD AND SOCKET FASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED NOV.'9,19I4- I Y Patented Dec. 25,1917.

Specification of Letters Patent. Patentd-])ec;25 1917;
' t i aaewov ber 9,1914. Serial at; 571,620. Ii,
To all whom it mayconcerm,
Be it known that I, Mean H. Moon uen, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynchburg, in the county of Campbell and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in separable Rigid Head-and-Socket Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to buckles, buttons, and clasps, and more specifically to separable rigid-head-and-socket fasteners.
The object of my invention is to provide a rigid-head-and-socket fastener which is simple in construction, durable, and effective in operation. My invention is designed primarily for use as a shoe fastening device, for which purpose substantial parts are required, without delicate springs of any kind to wear out. This button may be readily fastened and unfastened with the fingers, and is so constructed that it will not come open unless forced open by a pull with the fingers such as is used in the operation of opening an ordinary button shoe.
Other objects of this invention not at this time more particularly enumerated. will be clearly understood from the detailed description and drawings forming a part of this specification.
Furthermore, this invention consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts more particularly described in the following specifica ion and embodied in the claim appended hereunto and forming a part of this application.
Referring now to the drawings which are merely illustrative of my invention, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View of my device in closed position. taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2, while Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 33. of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the button or head member of my device. Fig. 5 is a detail plan view of the buttonhole plate of my socket, while Fig. 6 is a modification of the same.
Referring further to the drawings, wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout the respective views, 1 designates a hollow metal cap, one side of which is oval while the opposite side is flat. A keyhole slot is formed in the frame side of the cap 1 including a substantially circular hole 2, and a tongue-shaped slot 3 ,whichis, radial to said=-holef2 and formed in continuation thereof, are punched through the fiat face of said cap 1 in such manner as to leave a flap on the side of said hole opposite said slot, so that one end of the cut portion may be bent upwardly within the slot to form a spring 4. Integral with the flat side of said cap, projecting therefrom, and spaced apart around the circumference thereof are a plurality of pronged members 5 adapted to serve as a means for fastening said cap to the member 6 which is to be fastened. A button consisting of a circular head 7 slightly flattened on its top, a shank 8 integral therewith, and a base plate 9 integral with the outer end of said shank is adapted to be secured, by means of pronged members 10 spaced apart around said base plate, to the member 11 which is to be fastened to the member 6 to which the socket is secured.
A modification of my cap provides a double, or split, spring 4 as shown in Fig. 6, but it will be apparent that in each of the illustrated forms the spring 4 will engage with the button head as the latter is forced toward the hole 2. thus resisting to a desired degree the withdrawal of the button head. The spring 4 does not, however. contact with the head 7 except at the withdrawal or entrance thereof from the fastener 1, so that this spring need not be subjected to undue tension.
The utility, adaptability, and advantages of my improved form of separable rigidhead-and-socket fasteners being obviously apparent, it is unnecessary to further enlarge upon the same herein.
Having now described and pointed out the new and useful features of my invention, I do not limit myself to the shape of certain parts where the shape is not essential. nor do I restrict myself to the exact details of construction shown and described, but mean and intend to claim all equivalents and variations thereof not departing in principle from my invention and falling within the purview of the appended claim.
\Vhat I claim is my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a device of the class described the com bination of a pair of superposed strips, a headed stud having a base plate secured to the lower strip, the upper strip having a receiving opening and a procircular stud jecting shank receiving slot, a hollow cap having an integraL-fiat buse securedto the upper surface of the upper strip abovesaid A openings, saicL-basehaving complementeily arranged openings therein alining with the openings in the strip,; and'an integra1'- arcuate spring tongue projecting from the edge of-=-thecircu1arppening in said-base at a point diametricallyppposite the s1ot and extending between "said' "edge'and' the mm or thli' 'mni ma we detained m same are as the curvature of the contiguous EdgGOf-Sflld cap,
In testimony Whereef I :iiiix my signature in presence .oftwo Witnesses.
