Be it known that I, Ci-inisiAN I?. IInnsHnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of TWayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strainers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to strainers of the type particularly designed as attachments for coffee or tea pots, whereby it may be inserted into the pot and be thereby positioned over the inner end of the spout thereof in such a manner that it may be removably held in position without materially interfering with the normal function of the lid or cover for the pot. It is the object hereof to reduce the manufacturing cost of a device of this character as well as to increase the eilieiency thereof7 by reducing the number of parts involved and simplifying the' construction thereof to aid in the assembling of the elements. t

With the above and other objects in view as will be apparent, this invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein;

Figure 1 is a perspective view with parts broken away of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention;

Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view of a pot constructed showing the present invention in conjunction therewith;

Fig. 3 is a view of the clamp whereby the strainer is removably secured to the pot; and

Fig. 4 is an elevation of the carrying frame with gauze located therein prior to the fastening of the clamp and gauze within the frame.

In carrying out the present invention a rectangular frame is provided having a lip on each of the four sides thereof, said frame being adapted to receive and support a strainer of gauze or screen and a clamp, both of which are held in place by the lips aforesaid, when the latter are bent to rest parallel to, or iiush upon the sides of the fra-me.

bent to rest parallel to, or flush upon their respective sides, when the device is fully assembled and ready for use. In order to form a continuous structure when the lips 11, 11 and 12 are bent to rest parallel to or flush upon, the sides of the frame 10. The ends of said lips are cut obliquely as at 13 to create miters at the corners of the frame when the device is assembled. A section of gauze, screen or other suitable strainer material 14, cut to the shape and dimensions of the frame 10 is designed to rest flush against one surface of said frame and be carried and supported thereby. As will be hereinafter apparent, the gauze 14 is held in place by the lips 11, 11 and 12 so that said gauze and frame are unitary construction.

Cooperating with the frame 10 and the gauze or screen 14, is a clamp 15 constructed 0f wire or other suitable spring material. This clamp is arranged to be located adjacent to the end lip 11 and is also designed for cooperation with adjoining portions of the side lips 12, whereby it is secured to the frame 10 together with the gauze or screen 14 as will become apparent. The clamp 15 comprises a single strand of wire bent medially upon itself to create a loop 16, the arms 16 of said loop diverging one from the' other. These arms 16 of said loop 16 are bent at their free ends to form the opposed right-angles 17 which correspond to, and coincide with the adjoining corner angles of the frame 10.

When the device is assembled, the clamp 15 is placed upon the gauze or screen 14 at the end of the frame 10 adjoining the lip 11, so that the right-angles 17 thereof coincide with the corners of said frame; after which the lips 11, 11 and 12 are bent to rest flush against, or parallel to the sides of the frame, thus securing the clamp 15 as well as the gauze or screen 14 to the frame. The end lip 11 is recessed, as at 18, to accommodate the arms 16 of the loop 16. Hence, it becomes manifest that the device takes the form of a unitary structure with the gauze or screen 14 and the clamp 15 secured to the frame 10 by the lips 11, 11 and 12, said clamp projecting from the frame and constituting a means whereby the present strainer may be removably attached over the spout S of the vessel or pot R without interfering with the normal functions of the lid L.

In order to position the loop 16 of the clamp 15 so that it may secure the strainer to the receptacle R, said loop is curved adj acent to the lip 11, as at 19, in such a manner that it converges toward the gauze or screen 14. At its free end 16, it is curved outwardly as at 2O so that at the curve 2 0 it rests approximately against the gauze or screen 14 when the strainer is not in use. The curve 19 in the arms 16 of the loop 16 creates a resiliency between the free end of said loop and the frame 10 and gauze or screen 14 carried thereby, said pressure being such that the device is held iush against the inner end of the spout S of the pot or vessel R. It is also clear from the drawing that inasmuch as the frame is curved to conform to the contour of a standard pot or vessel, the strainer will, when in position, cover the inner end of the spout S and will not permit any liquid to escape from Said pot or vessel R without passing through the gauze or screen 14.

From the foregoing, it is manifest that the only portions of the strainer passing over the edge of the receptacle or vessel R are the arms 16 Of the loop 16, which being made of wire will not interfere with the normal operation of the lid. Furthermore, the spring action of the clamp rigidly holds the strainer in position so that it may readily be removed from the vessel or receptacle R, and at the same time will not normally be displaced from its operative position.

Vhat is claimed is:

1. The combination with a frame, of a plurality of lips formed from Said frame, a screen or gauze mounted in said frame, and

a clamp comprising a wire rebent to create a loop, the arms of which correspond to.

and co-incide with the corners of said frame,

said clamp and gauze being secured to the Y being recessed to receive the arms of saidclamp. Y

3. The combination with a frame, of a lip formed from each side thereof, a gauze or screen mounted on said frame, and a clamp coperating therewith comprising a single strand of wire rebent to form a loop, the arms of said loop being bent to form opposed angles corresponding and co-inciding with the corner angles of theV frame, said clamp and gauze being held in place by the lips aforesaid.

4. The combination with a frame, of a lip formed from each side thereof, a gauze or screen mounted on said frame, and a clamp coperating therewith comprising a single strand of wire rebent to form a loop, the arms of said loop being bent to form opposed angles corresponding and cO-inciding with the inner angles of the frame, said clamp and gauze being held in place by the lips aforesaid, said loop being bent so that its free end terminates adjacent to said gauze or screen aforesaid.
