To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, HENRY Bessere and REUBEN B. BENJAMIN, both citizens of the vUnited States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of liiinois, have jointly invented new and useful lmproveinents in Changeable Exhibitors, of which the following is e full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to changeshle eX hibitors', and more speciicaily to changeable exhibitors oi" the type comprising a piuraiH ity of reels and webs.
Among the objects of our invention is to provide n device of this character which Wili be simple ofconstruction and easy to operate.
Further objects will appear from the des tailed description to follow taken in connection with the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which We have iliustreted fone embodiment of our invention- Figure l is a perspective View of our device showing the opening through which the Webs are displayed and showing ais/o the slots in the side of t e casing through which the thumb Wheels which are used to ectuete the reels entend;
Fig. 2 is o plan view of our device, parts being broken avr/ay to show the partitions placed between the pairs of reeis, to shortI the construction of the reels and to show the spring which exerts pressure on the reeis to prevent the web from being unwound too rapidly; and
Fig. 3 is esection on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 showing 'the guide over which the weh passes and the manner in which it is supported by the partitions between the reeis.
Referring now to the drawings in detaii our improved device comprises e casing l() which may be of any suitable material, as card-board. having an opening 1l in its top through which the Webs are displayed and having slots l2 on two of its opposite sides through which the thumb Wheels for actuating the reels extend in position to he engaged by the hand of the operator. The hot tom of the casing is closed hy means of a strip i3 which may he of wood and which secured to the rest of the casing in any Specification of Letters Patent.

suitable manner as. by screws or tacks 14. Blocks i5 are secured to the ends of the cit-sing in which are supported o psirloi' shafts 16 which extend substantially the i'ull length of the casing and on which :1re rotetahly mounted the reels ,or spools 17 to which the ends of the webs are secured. Thumb wheels i8a which may be ot cerdboard, and are proif'ided with knuried edges 18a: are secured to the reels ll' in any7 suitable manner, as by tacks i9, the edges of these thumb Wheels 18 extending through the slots l2 in the casing. The Webs 20 are secured to the reels 1.7 so that they can he Wound from one to the other. Partitions 2l provided between each of reels to preventthe webs from running oi of the reels. These partitions ure provided with recesses 22 in their upper edges to assist in hoiding in place the guide or tahle over which 'the Webs run. These Webs are exact duplicates with the exception of the one shown at the extreme left in Fig. 2. This;
web is provided Wit i a series ci? Word sugggestingi means such as pictures 23 and each picture may also he provided with a title, as indicated at 242 in Figs. i and 2. The other Webs are, es indicated at 25 in Figs. and 2, eech provided with ali of the letters of the alphabet, all of the numerals end the nui .mericai signs. A guide or table 26., which may he of sheet instel, extends substantially the full length oi? the casing 10 and is provided with curved down-turned edges 27 which enter the recesses 22 in the upper edge of the partitions 2i to hold. the guide 1n place., A spring 28 is provided at the end of the casingn l0 for exerting" endwise pressure on the reels to prevent the Webs from being unwound too rapidly therefrom. The free ends of this spring are hiurcated, as shown at Q9 in Fig. 3 so as to straddle the shafts 16 to exert an even pressure on the reels. rhe spring 28 has its middie portion secured to the blocks i5 hy means of screws 30, Figs. 2 and 3.
it will he noted that the spring 28 will cause endwise pressure to be exerted on all of the reels, the pressure being,l transmitted from one reel to another through the partitions 2li between the reels, which partitions arc not rigidly secured to the casing, so that the endwse pressure on the reels will he substantially cquelzed.
The use and operation of our device is follows: The left hand one of the webs 2O may be turned until one of the word suggesting means 23 appears through the opening 1l. The other webs 2O which are provided with the letters of the alphabet may* then be shifted by means of the thumb wheels 18 until the word suggested by the left hand web is made to appeal'. through the mitted to the other reels through said parti.. l
the combination with two sets of reels, each' set comprising a plurality of rotatable, co-v axially mounted reels, thel reels of one being arranged in pairs with the reels of the other set, a plurality of webs one for each pair of reels which are reeled from one reel to the other, a partition between each pair of reels, and means for supporting said reels and partition so that pressure in an axial direction on one of said reels will, be transtion.
2. ln a device of the character described the combination with two sets of reels, each set comprising a plurality o rotatable, ooi ineens() axially mounted reels the 'reels of one set bel niitted to the other reels'through said partition, and spring means for exerting pressure on said reels.
I 3. 1n a device of the character described the combination with two sets of reels, each set Comprising a plurality of rotatable,- coaxially mounted reels, the reels of one set' being arranged in pairs with the reels of the other set, a plurality of webs one for each pair ol reels which are reeled from one reel to the other, a partition between each pair of reels, means for supporting said reels and partitions so that pressure 4in an axial direction on one of said reels will be transmitted to the other reels through said partition, and
portion and having two free ends for exerting pressure on a pair of reels adjacent the axes thereof.
In witness whereof, we
scribed our naines.
