Be it known that we, HEN Y CLASEN and CHARLIE onsLnn, citizens of the United States, residing at Mindoro, in the county of La Crosse, State of lVisconsin, haveinvented a new and useful lVllICll'XlllkGOllpling, and we do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the'same.
This invention is adevice designed for use in connecting a wind mill with its pump.
Its principal object is to provide means for quickly and easily disconnecting the pump from the mill, so that the pump may be operated by hand.
Another object is to provide a separable connection between the reciprocating rod of the wind mill and the pump plunger that will positively couple the two together.
As a third object, provision is made for the easy uncoupling of the mill and pump by the shifting of a hand operated lever.
In setting forth this invention a definite plan of construction has been 'adhered to, but the invention is not to be restricted to this especial structure. The right is reserved to vary the details of construction to meet the demands of practice, so long as these variations are comprehended in spirit by the appended claims.
In the drawings the same numerals of reference are used to designate the same parts throughout the several figures, wherein:

Fig. 1 shows a conventional wind mill having the wind wheel 1,.the supporting members 2, the platform 3 and the recipro- V eating rods 4 and 5. It is, of course, understood that this wind mill has in addition to the parts mentioned all the appurtenances necessary to make it complete and to enable it to impart a reciprocating motion to the rod 4. F ig. 1 also shows a conventional .pump 6 with its attendant plunger 7 and handle 8.
The coupler comprisesthechannel piece 9, the flat spring 10 and the rod 11 which is 'an integral part of the-pump plunger. The channel piece 9 is designed for attach ment to the rod at, the bolts 12 with their nuts 13 serving to effect this attachment and also the attachment of the flat spring '10 against the web of the channel piece 9.
At the end remote from the rod l, the channel piece 9 has a short channel piece 14 attached, the flanges of 1% attaching to the flanges of 9 by any acceptable means. The channel piece 1% operates as a keeper for rod 11, so that the latter is always retained in close but slidable contact with the flanges and web of the channel piece 9. At a point above where piece 14: is connected, suitable pivotable connections 16 are provided on which the arms 17 of the hand lever 15 are supported. The arms 1'7 are integral parts of the lever 15 which has also handle 18. The spread of the arms 17 is equal to the width of the channel piece 9 outside its flanges and these arms are adapted to receive at their ends the small shaft 19 on which .the roll 29 is capable of turning, the shaft 19 being held frictionally in the eyes of the arms 17. i
The fiat spring 10, torthe greater part of its length, lies normally against the web of the channel piece 9. Ata certain point it is turned atright angles away from channel piece 9 and then turned back so as to parallel channel piece 9, turning away again from channel piece 9 at right anglesto form the narrow flange 21 on which the web of the channel piece 22 rests. That part2 c of the spring 10 which parallels the channel piece 9 slants diagonally away from 9 near the point where it merges into the right angled bend 23.
A stud 25 having a. shoulder portion 26 and a short projection 27 emanating from the shoulder portion is connected to the spring 10 and to the channel 22, the peening over of the head of 27, after it has passed through holes in the web of channel piece 22 and that end of spring 10 near 21, serving to hold the stud 25, the channel piece 22 and the fiat spring 10 together.
In the web of channel piece 1% a hole is provided and, likewise, in the web of channel piece 9 a similar hole is made. Both these holes are in alinement and are adapted Patented Nov. 6, 1917.
to register with the stud 2-5, when the lat ter is in its normal position.
The rod 11 is an integral part of the pump plunger, as shown in Fig. 1. This rod is provided ith a hole or holes through which the stud 25 is designed to pass when effecting the coupling operation.
In Fig. 1 the device is shown connecting the reciprocating rod of a wind mill with the plunger of a pump, the position of the stud 25 being such that it maintains the rod 11 in positive connection with channel member 9, so that any movement of rod 4C will, thereby, be transmitted to the pump plunger.
V3 hen it is desired to uncouple the pump from the mill, the lever 15 is operated by pulling down on its handle 18. A movement downward of this handle 18 results, by virtue of the pivotal connection 16, in an upward movement of the roll 20 which, pressing against that part of the spring 10, serves to disengage the stud on both the channel piece 9 and the rod 11. The position assumed by the parts after the uncoupling operation is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The acute angle formed at the junction of the bends 28 and 2% of the spring 10 forms a means for retaining the roller 20 in the position assumed after the uncoupling operation, while the 'small flanges 29 serve as a limiting means to prevent the spring 10 and channel 22 from being moved too far out of position.
T he invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful, is 2-- 1. In a device for coupling wind mills and the like, a channel member adapted to engage the reciprocating rod of a wind mill, a pump plunger in sliding engagement between the flanges of the channel member, means in surrounding relation to the pump plunger for insuring the sliding relation betw on it and the channel member, said means having oppositely disposed holes, said pump plunger having a hole adapted to register with said oppositely disposed holes, a flat resilient member adjacent to the longitudinal edge of the channel memher, said resilient member having an offset end formed by bending it at right angles on itself with the bent portion turned back into plane parallel with the channel member, an acute angle obtaining at the junction of the offset end and right angled bend, a stud carried by said offset end and adapted to register with said oppositely disposed holes and said hole in said pump plunger for effecting a positive connection between said channel member and said pump plunger, and means pivoted to said channel member for shifting the position of said resilient member and said stud with respect to said pump plunger and to said surrounding means therefor, said means comprising a Ushaped lever whose legs straddle the channel member, a shaft supported between the ends of the legs of said U-shaped lever and a roll carried by said shaft and rotatable thereon, said roll being adapted to rest in the acute angle formed in the oilset end to hold said stud out of engagement with said pump plunger.
2. In a device for coupling wind mills and the like, a channel member adapted to engage the reciprocating rod of a wind mill, a pump plunger in sliding engagement between the fianges of the channel member, means in surrounding relation to the pump plunger for insuring the sliding relation between it and the channel member, said means having oppositely disposed holes, said pump plunger having a hole adapted to register with said oppositely disposed holes, a Hat resilient member adjacentto the longitudinal edge of the channel member and having an offset end, a stud carried by said offset end and adapted to register with said oppositely disposed holes and said hole in said pump plunger for elfecting a positive connection between said channel mem ber and'said pump plunger, a guide piece carried by said offset end and substantially surrounding said stud and said means surrounding the pump plunger, and means piv oted to said channel member for shifting the position of said resilient member and said stud with respect to said pump plunger and to said surrounding means therefor, said means comprising a U-shaped lever whose straddle the channel member, a shaft supported between the ends of the leg of said U-shaped lever and a roll carried by said shaft and rotatable thereon.
