IMPROVEMENT IN UPRIGHT PlANOS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,470, dated March l2, 1872.
Specitication describing a new and Improved Upright Piano-Forte, invented by OsKAE AL- TENBURG, of New York city, in the county and State of New York.

This invention relates to an improved arrangement of the case or frame of an upright piano-forte; and consists in hinging the faceplate of the top to the case so that it can be folded down, and in providing it with a rib or device for the support of the music when thus folded down. The object of the inventionis, iirst, to allow a convenient and full display of the action and a free escape of the soundwaves; also, read5T approach to the pins for tunin g, and to dispense with the necessity of opening the top of the case, which may be used as a support for various articles.
A, in the drawing, represents the piano-case. B is the hinged lid or cover of the key-board,
C, the hinged lid on top of the case; and D, the facepiece or front-plate of the upper case. This plate D is hinged at its lower edge, and may be folded down, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The face-plate D is provided with a projecting rib or shoulder, a, or equivalent device, which serves as a support for the music whenever the plate D is folded down over the lid B, as by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The lid B, however, is also provided with a music-support, as is in the usual manner, which is required whenever the plate D is not folded down.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The hinged face-plate D and music-rack combined, applied to an upright piano-forte, substantially as herein shown and described.
