To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DARELL M. CHAM- BERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Levels, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is an improved level, which I call a levelet, and which is especially adapted for use in connection with a trysquare'to enable a try-square to be used also for the purposes of a level, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this character which is simple in construction, which is extremely compact, and which may be readily attached to and detached from a try-square.

The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of devices, hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Figure l is an elevation of a level constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention showing the same applied to a try-square and with the detachable plate of the level removed.

Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line 22 of Fig. 1.

In the embodiment of my invention I provide a suitably shaped body 1 which has an opening 2 and also has a semi-circular chamber or recess 3 with which the said opening communicates. The body also has three angularly related faces 4 and corners 5 between said angularly related faces and each of said faces is provided with a pair of spaced walls 6, each of said walls having a notch 7 in its outer edge U-shaped clamping members 8 are provided, which are made of spring material. The intermediate portions of said clamping members are inserted in recesses 9 with which the body is provided and said clamping members are secured to the body by cross pins 10, and their arms 11 which spring toward each other are adapted to engage opposite sides of a try-square such as is indicated at A. Each arm 11 has an out-turned end 12 which operates in one of the notches 7.

A spirit tube 13 is arranged in a frame 14 which extends across the chamber 3 and is provided at one end with a flexible arm 15, secured to one side of the opening 2 as by means of a screw 16. At the opposite end of the frame is an arm 17 which has a guide slot 18. A guide stud 19 engages in the guide slot. An angle arm 20 extends inwardly in the chamber 3 from the adjustable end of the frame 14 and is engaged between nuts 21 on an adjusting screw 22. Said screw and nuts coact with said angle arm to adjust the level and its arm as required. A detachable substantially semi-circular plate 23 is provided to form one side or wall of the chamber 3 and is detachably secured in a semi-circular groove 24 by means of a screw which engages in an opening 25 in a shoulder 26 in the lower side of the chamber.

The device is used in connection with the try-square to enable the latter to be used as a level, the device being arranged in the angle between the arms of the try-square and with said try-square arms engaging two of the faces a of the body, said try-square arms being engaged by the spring clips or fastening devices 8 as shown and hence the device is securely and yet detachably fastened to the try-square. When it is not desired to use the try-square for leveling purposes the body may be detached therefrom.

It is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent without requiring a more extended explanation and therefore the same has been omitted. However, I desire to have it understood that various changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of the appended claim.

Having described the invention, what is claimed is:

A level device for use in connection with a try-square and comprising a body having anguiarly related faces each provided with two spaced Walls to receive the arms of a try-square and enable the device to be arranged in the angle between said arms, said Walls having notches in their outer edges, U-shaped clamping members arranged between said walls, having their intermediate aortions secured in recesses in the body and havlng their arms provided with out-turned ends which operate in said notches, and a 1 spirit tube carried on said body.
