To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LIONEL NORMAN, a citizen of the United States. residing at Vinchester, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Pails; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to paper pails for storing or shipping edible or other products, and more particularly to that class of pails provided with fasteningdevices for securing a cover to the pail.
The object of the present invention is to provide a pail of this character with a cover fastening device which may be readily applied to the pail in such manner that under all conditions of use sufficient pressure to form a strong joint will be maintained between the cover and the pail.
To this end the invention contemplates the provision in a pail provided with a cover, removable to permit access to the interior of the pail, of a fastening device for holding the cover against movement provided with a portion formed for pene tration into the material of the cover and another portion constructed for locking engagement with a part of the pail. the arrangement being such that as the fastening device is assembled in position the pressure necessary to embed the penetrating portion in the cover forces the cover on the pail, and the joint so formed is maintained by the other portion of the fastening device when it springs into locking engagement with the pail part at a time when the cover and pail are still under pressure.
The various features. of the present invention will be readily understood from an inspection of the accompanying drawings,

In the construction shown in the drawings, the pail 1 is a cylindrical receptacle for storing or shipping butter, etc, and is pro vided with a cover 2 having a marginal flange 3, one wall of which fits tightly the interior of the pail, and the other wall of which rests on the top of the pail. The cover is removable to permit access to the interior of the pail, and a pair of fastening devices are provided on opposite sides of the pail for securing the cover in position on the pail, one member of each pair being clenched to the pail and the other member of each pair being connected to the cover.
The pail fastening member is formed from a blank 4 of resilient sheet metal comprising a body portion 5 terminating in bosses 6. andan intermediate portion forming a blank 7 for a bail hook to be described. The pail fastening member is shaped out of the blank t by upsetting the bodv portion 5 to form the spacing pieces 8 and shoulders 9 thereby con erting the bodv portion into an arch 10 bridging the end bosses 6. Projecting in opposite directions from the bosses 6 are narrow, ta ered strips 11 which are bent down parallel to each other in adirection at right angles to the bosses 6 to form tangs which may be clenched through the ma erial of the pail to secure the pail fastening member in position as shown in Fig. 1. \Vhen in posit on. the ends of the fastening member are flush with the pail, the po tion bridging the ends being spaced from the pail by the pieces 8 to form a central open ng for the reception of the cover fastening member. The cover fastening member is formed from a strip of resllient sheet'metal comprising the bodv bent intermediate its ends to form the completed cover fastening member illustrated in Fig. 8. The pail fastening member is secured to the side of the pail with the lower edge of the bridge 10 located at a dis tance from the top of the pail equal to the distance from the shoulder 15 to the bend 17 in the cover fastening member for a pur- .one form or" pail in which it may be empose which will presently be described. In assembling the cover fastenlng memher the pointed fingers 13 are directed at the cover and the rounded nose 16 at the central opening beneath the bridge 10. VI hen the fingers reach the cover sutiicient pressure is brought to bear upon the fastening to embed the fingersin the material of the cover. This pressure .causes the cover to be forced on the pail and the tongue to slide beneath the bridge 10. The tongue I and bridge yield to permit the passage oi simultaneously with the embedment of the fingers 13 into the material ofthe cover and at a time when the cover and pail are being pressed together. As theparts of the fastening device are made of stiff resilient metal substantially inflexible under the ordinary conditions occurring in the use of the pail, the pressure between the'cover and pail imparted during the penetration of the cover is retained, resulting, in a tight joint between the cover and pail suliiciently strong to withstand the jolts of shipping and handling.
To facilitate the handling of the pail, a bail I8 is provided which is looped across the pail and secured at opposite sides of the pail to hooks 19 shaped to, the form shown in Fig. 4 from the blank 7 carried by the pail fastening members. It is desirable that the bail remain either in an uprightposition where it may be readily grasped to move the pail, or down against the sides of the pail, and to this end the shoulders 9 on the bridge 10 are arranged so that the bail is wedged between the shoulders, and the hook when the bail is elevated or down against the sides of the pail. 7
Having explained the nature and object of the invention, and specifically described brings the locking portion into locking engagement withthe pail.

A pail, having, in combination, a cover, and a fastening device for holding the cover against movement, one member of which is formed of a single integral blank comprising end portions secured to'the pail and an 7 arched portion bridging the ends, the other member of which is formed of a strip of resilient material, having a portion formed for connection to the cover, and another portion formed for locking engagement with the bridge, said portions being arranged to become connected and lockedsimultaneously when assembled in cover holding position. 3. A pail, having in combination, a cover, and a locking device for holding the cover against movement, one member of which is formed of a single integral blank comprising end portions secured to the pail and an arched portion bridging the ends, the other member of which is formed of a strip of resilient material having one portion formed for penetration into the material of the cover, and another portion formed as a spring tongue terminating in a shoulder shaped for locking engagement with the bridge of the other member, said portions being so arranged that complete penetration into the material of the cover occurs simultaneouslywith the springing of the shoulder into locking engagement with the bridge.
