CATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1914.
Application inea september 12, 1913. serial m. 789,571.
To all whom it ma 'concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS C. Seem, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Catch,- of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a catch for doors, ladders, seats, ete., and for the pivoted covers of boxes, trunks, phonographs, pianos, cases and for various other articles.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide a catch adapted to be connected with the box or the like and cover in such a way that the cover can be held in open position but can be closed readily simply by manipulating the cover Without touchmg the catch, and especially to reduce a catch for this purpose to its simplest terms and minimum cost of manufacture.
Reference is to be had to the accompanyin drawings in which,
igure 1y is a side'elevation of a catchcon= structed in accordance with this invention*- showing it in position when the cover 1s open, the box appearing in section; and' Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the cover closed.
Although capable of a wide range of utility, the invention is shown as applied to a simple box or the like A having a pivoted cover B. It is to be understood that this may represent a trunk or a receptacle of any kind having such a cover.
The catch is shown in the form of a hat piece of sheet metal 10 pivoted at 11 to the cover and adapted to engage a pin or stud 12 on the box. The catch 10 is in the form of an arm having a longitudinal slot 13 therethrough, said slot being provided with an offset 14 at the front near the bottom. Said offset extends out from the main body of the slot substantially at right angles at the top and at an inclination at thebottom. At the top it has a substantially horizontal surface 15. Below the bottom of the offset there is an inward projection 16 and below that an enlarged opening 17 at the bottom of the slot. The projection 16 extends inwardly into the slot a material distance beyond the outer edge of the slot and therepin 12 in position to enter the slot when the cover is closed and engage the surface 15.
when the cover is open and hold the catch in inclined position. The operation of the device is very simple. If it is desired to hold the cover 1n open position, the cover is raised comparatively slowly until the offset 14 receives the pin 12. Then the surface 15 rests on the pin and holds'the cover open. As this surface is then at a slight rearward inclination the weight of the catch assists in holding it in that position. l/Vhen it is desired to close the cover, direct pressure down upon it will simply press the top of this offset against the pin and cannot result in dislodging the latch.
lVhen it is desired to`lower the cover, from this position, it is necessary first to raise it slightly until the latch comes up into such position that the pin 12 is in the enprojection 16 against the pin 12 with' such force as to throw the Whole latch over to the front and it has been found in practice that this throws it far enough so that the latch engages the pin at a point above the substantially horizontal upper wall 15 of the offset 14 and thus the catch is disengaged and the cover can be lowered.
Vhen it is desired to disengage the catch from the headed pin or stud 1Q the cover is raised until the pin is in the enlarged opening' 17. Then the latch can be moved sidewise to disengage it. Normally however the head of the stud overla s the edge of the slot and holds the latch 1n position.
It will be understood that the invention can be applied to all kinds of boxes, trunks, cases and the like which have hinged covers, and to ladders, seats, doors, etc.
Although I have illustrated' and described only a single form of the invention, I am aware of the fact that modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of thecatch having a slot therealong and said 'slot having a lateral offset, a` surface beyond the offset extending inwardly beyond the rear edge of the oi'set and an opening beyond said surface, and a projection on the article adapted to enter said. slot and engage in theI oi'set.
2. The combinationwith a box or case and -a cover pivoted thereto-at the rear, of a catch pivoted to the cover and freely depending therefrom, said catch having a 1ongitudinal slot provided with an offset nearthe lower end having a horizontal upper` wall and also having an enlarged openingv at the bottom below said oset and an inward.
projection just below the ,oHset, and a headed pin mounted on the box or casein osition to enter said enlarged opening and aving a shank permitting it to pass into the slot and offset, whereby when the cover 1s oiiset on the front side near the bottom having a horizontal top surface and with an inwardly extending projection just below the offset longer than the oi'set, and a pin in position to enter said slot and4 offset and i coperatiev therewith.
i 4. As an article of manufacture, a catch l'or a plvoted cover comprislng a. Het plece ot' sheet metal having a longitudinal'slot,
said slot being provided with atransverse offset on the front side near the bottom having a horizontal surface and with an inwardly extending projection just below the offset longer. than the offset, and an enlarged opening below: the projection.
. 5. lin a catch, the combination with a projection, of a catch'member therefor having a slot .for receiving said projection, said slot having an -o'set for engaging the projection and holding the catch member elevated, and' means carried by the catch member beyond said odset for receiving. `said projectionv when the catch member is raised abovesaid elevated position and preventing the projection entering the odset when the catch member is quickly lowered.. i
lin testimony whereof 'li have hereunto set my hand, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. L
