J. W. T. MORRIS.
SASH BALANCE.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 9. 1914.
Patented Dec. 1, 1914,
UNITED snares PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. T. MORRIS, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GUSTAVE A. WETTLIN AND LOUISA J. HAMER, 0F L03 ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
SASH-IBALANGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 1, 1914..
Application filed September 9, 1914. Serial No. 860,843.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN' W. T. Monnis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Sash-Balance, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to connect two window sashes together so that they will balance each other and provide convenient means for readily adjusting the connections so that when one sash is moved down to the bottom of the frame the other sash will be moved up to the top of the frame; and my invention consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window provided with sash balances embodying the principles of my invention, the wall being broken away to economize space and parts of the sash being shown in section to illustrate the details of construction. Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical cross section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional detail on a plane parallel with Fig. 1 and illustrating the operation of adjusting the connection. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional detail on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
The sash cord pulleys 1 and 2 are mounted upon the window frame 3 atthe upper corners of the window opening 4 and the sash cords 5 and 6 run over the pulleys 1 and 2, the upper, outer ends of the sash cords running downwardly in grooves 7 formed in the upper sash 8, there being knots 9 in the ends of the cords to fit in recesses 10 in the sash, so that the cords are connected to the sash. The upper corners of the sash 8 have notches 11 and 12 so as to allow the sash to pass upwardly past the pulleys 1 and 2. The pulleys 1 and 2 are set against the inner vertical faces of the window frame so that the cords run on planes crosswise of the window opening. The cords 5 and 6 extend downwardly in front of the pulleys 1 and 2 in grooves13 and 14; formed in the Copies of this patent sides of the lower sash 15 and knots 16 and 17 are formed upon the lower ends of the cords. The cords 5 and 6 are inserted through ears 18 and 19 before the knots 16 and 17 are formed. Bars 20 and 21 extend downwardly from the ears 18 and 19 and are bent laterally to form the screw-threaded nuts 22 and 23. The adjusting screws 24 and 25 are inserted upwardly through the nuts 22 and 23, there being hooks 26 and 27 extending inwardly and upwardly from the lower ends of the adjusting screws, and after the screws have been adjusted to give the connections the proper length, the hooks 26 and 27 are inserted into openings in the lower ends of the side pieces of the sash 15. The adjusting mechanisms thus constructed are mounted in recesses 28 and 29 formed in the ends of the side faces of the sash 15. When it is desired to adjust the connections between the sashes 8 and 15, the lower sash is raised, the hooks 26 and 27 pulled downwardly and the screws 24: and 25 rotated to the desired extent and then the hooks are replaced.
The details of construction may be varied in many ways without departing from the spirit of my invention as set up in the following claim.
I claim- A sash balance construction comprising, the combination with two window sashes, of a pulley mounted upon the window frame; a sash cord extending over the pulley; means for connecting the sash cord to one sash; and adjusting means for connecting the cord.
JOHN W. T. MORRIS.
