JOHN G. HUNTER, F NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
FOUNTAIN SPRAY-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 24, 1914.
Application filed February 27, 1914. Serial No. 821,443.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN G. HUNTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain Spray-Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fountain spray brushes of the type used in the bath and the object of my improvement is simplicity and economy in construction and convenience and efiiciency in use.
In the accompanying drawing :-Figure 1 isa front elevation in part broken out and in section of my improved fountain spray brush. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the brush proper. being in part broken away, and the outline of the brush being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of part of the same. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view on an enlarged scale on the line a: a: of Fig. 3.
My fountain spray brush comprises a brush proper and a spraying device 11 constructed and combined in a special manner.
The brush proper 10 is of inverted U shape as viewed in front elevation and has a pronounced bend at about the middle as shown at 12, as shown in side elevation, suitably to fit curved portions of the body.
The spraying device 11 comprises a perforated portion 16 which is positioned axially between the arms of the U of the brush and has a bend as shown at 13 to correspond to the bend 12 of the brush proper 10. The portion of the spraying device 11 outwardly from the bend 13 is relatively short, the end 14 thereof being appreciably separated from the opposed apex portion 15 of the brush 'proper 10. The said spray portion 16 is made of round tubing appreciably flattened and is rovided with a plurality of'perforations 1? in the side and front wall and the free end 14 already mentioned is flattened still more than the body portion and so that the round hole corresponding to the bore of the original tubing assumes the form of a wide slit 18 at the extreme end.
The brush proper 10 and the spraying device 11 are mounted on a suitable handle 19.
The preferred form of construction of my fountaln spray device is as follows :--The handle 19 is elongated; has an axial bore 20, to fit the cylindrical tubular lower extension 21 of the spraying device 11; has a relatively wide head 22 at the upper end; has a pair of grooves 23 extending one on each side of the head 22 from the extreme upper end inwardly for an appreciable distance, and inwardly directed holes 241 at the inner end of each of the said grooves 23; has the extreme upper end faced off adjacent the bore suitably to serve as a seat for a securing plate 25 at the junction of the spray portion 16 and the downward extension 21 of the spraying device 11 and which is secured by pins 26; and is provided adjacent the said extreme upper end with a holding strip 27 passing around the sides and across the grooves 23 and which is placed in position after the lower ends 28 of the brush proper 10 have been placed in the said grooves 23, being secured by suitable pins 29.
The brush proper 10 comprises a frame 30 composed of a pair of wires twisted together with the bristles 31 positioned between the same in an ordinary manner. The frame 30 is bent into U shape; is provided with the bond 12 already mentioned; the lower ends 28 thereof fit into the grooves 23, and they are provided at the extreme lower ends with inwardly bent portions 32 that fit in and are positioned in the holes 21. The holding strip 27 extends across one face, as the rear face, of the head 22; the head 22; and has the front ends secured to the front face of the head 22 by the pins 29. A pin 29 may also be provided in the portion extending across the rear face of the head 22.
The spraying device 11 comprises the perforated portion 16 flattened as described at the upper end; the cylindrical ext nsion 21. at the lower end, extending through the handle 19, and having the extreme lower end projecting beyond the handle 19 suitably to receive the end of a rubber tubing; and the securing plate 25 at the junction of the said flattened perforated portion 16 and the cylindrical portion 21 and which is socured to the said junction in some suitable manner, as by soldering. The securing passes around the lateral edges of plate by means of the pins 26 serves to sebore and are in fact made by one drilling through the handle.
The Wire frame of the brush serves as a guard for the spray portion, which is flattened as described, and therefore the spray portion can be made appreciably shorter than the brush frame as shown and Without danger When in use.
To provide extra spraying effect to offset the feature of reducing the'relative overall length of the spraying device I provide the axial opening 18 in the end of the spraying device. The said opening being in the form of a slit, serves to deliver Water suitably to be distributed effectively by the bristles 31 at the end of the brush. The
'slit 18 is"forriied by flattening the end of the tube of Which the spray device is formed, thus elongating the original circular bore of the said tube. The flattening of the end of the tube described besides effecting the elongating of the delivery portion also serves to taper the said end so that the extreme end or tip portion is appreciably reduced relatively to the wire frame of the brush, suitably to 'be efi'ectively guarded say, the reduction of the end of the tube serves 'to bring the dimensions of the same down Within limits suitably to be guarded by the Wire frame when in -use, and by efa handle, a spraying thereby when in use. That is to fecting such reduction in such a manner as to provide an axial opening at the end, a delivery opening is provided at the end suitable for cooperating with the bristles at the end of the brush so as effective distribution of the Water at the said end of the brush.
I claim as my invention In a fountain spray brush, a brush proper comprising a frame of Wire of Ul-shape and bristles distributed along the said frame, the ends of the said frame being secured in device extending from the said handle, the said spraying device comprising atubular structure, positioned axially between the arms of thes'aid U- shaped frame, and having perforations in to produce an V the side Wall suitable for delivering Water to the bristles adjacent thereto, and the said spraying-device being appreciably shorter than the said frame by which it is inclosed and being provided With an axial opening at the extreme end suitable for delivering '1 I Water tothe bristles relatively remote from the said spraying device at the-end portion of the brush. g j Jenn c. nnn'rnn.
