To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ROMAN ZAWERACZ, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Bentleyville, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Tables, of which the following is a specification,
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in folding tables.
The primary object of this device is to i provide a foldable table structure adaptable when unfolded aseither a double topped table or a double length extension table.
A further object is to provide a table structure capable of use as an extension table and having all of its parts including the leg supports foldable into a compact form for storage and similar purposes.
A still further object is to provide a foldable table structure having an extensible top adaptable for operative position either extended or upon an inclined plane.
With these general objects in view and.
others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views :Figure' 1 is a side elevation of the table set up in its exhorizontal transverse sectional view taken upon line VIVI of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a detail vertical sectional view taken upon line VI -e il of F .1... andlF g- '8 is an an larged perspective view of the sliding cotter pm employed with each of the table legs.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the. rectangular table frame 10 is formed of two sections or halves l1 hinged together at each end on their under sides as at 12 for folding one upon the other.
The end bars 13 of the frame sections areprovidedon their upper faces with a dovetail tenon or strip 14 positioned in alinement with each other and slidably-mounted within a cooperating dove-tail groove 15 upon the under side of each of the two end table leaves 16 while similar grooves 17 are provided in the under face of the adjoining leaf 18 and whereby the entire frame 10 may be slid from the position shown in Fig. 2, in engagement with the leaf 16 to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 and engaging beneath the leaf 18 and the. adjacent one of said leaves 16.
The leaf 18 and the adjacent leaf 16 are hinged together as at 19 while the two leaves 16 are adapted to be secured together in alinement with each other by means of opposite latches 20 carried by one of said leaves and adapted to be hooked over screws 21 and retained thereon by means of winged set nuts 22. The outer edge of the leaf 18 has a leaf 23 hinged thereto by-the upper hinges 24 while a terminal leaf 25 is hinged to the outer upper edge of the leaf 23 by top hinges26, it being noted that the length of the leaves 23 and 25 is substantially one-half of that of the leaves 16 and 18.
For supporting the table top structure in its unfolded position, the frame 10 is provided at each corner thereof with a diagonally-positio'ned hinge bolt 27. each having a table leg hinged thereon. Each of said legs comprises an upper member 28 having one of said hinge bolts projecting therethrough and adapted to be contacted by a resilient strap 29 upon the hinging operation and whereby the legs are maintained in either their folded or unfolded positions.

of each upper section and foot, for the reception of a sliding pin or cotter 31. adapted for movement within such slot by the exertion of force upon the. projecting head 35 thereof and whereby as will be apparent by referring to Fig. 5 of the drawings, the cotter is slidable downwardly past the hinge connection of the two leg portions and extending Within the collar 32 and extending positioned in the groove of both of said leg sections, locks the sections against any hinging movement therebetween and provides a rigid structure for the support of the table.
' With the parts positioned as shown in Fig. 2 and with the set nuts 22 firmly holding the leaves 16 together by means ofthe latches 20, the entire frame 10 is adapted to he slid centrally beneath the entire tabletop to assume the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, being directly beneath the leaf 18 and the adjacent one of the leaves 16, and in which position it will be apparent, the outer leaf 16 will form an extension of the top while with the half leaves 23 and 25 unfolded as disclosed in both of said figures, the extension will be of equal lengths on each side of the table frame and thereby forming the extension table in its extended position. Again referring to Fig. 2, it will be seen that four legs are moved upwardly upon their hinge bolts 27 and the feet memhers 30 unhinged and the cutters forced into seated positions with each leg assuming the relations shown by the single upright leg in Fi 4.
in Fig. 1, the fullline position illustrates the I completely unfolded extended table structure. \Vith the table frame and its supporting legs positioned beneath the two leaves 16 as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the remaining leaves 18, 23, and 25 may be swung-upwardly in an arcuate path upon the hinges 19 to assume the inclined position therein disclosed in dotted lines. being retained in such position by means of hinged supports 36 pivoted to the front edge 37 of the table leaf 16 and adapted for reception within cut-away notches 38 in theadjacent edge of the half leaf 25 when so positioned above said supports 36. The dotted line position of the inclined leaves 18, 23 and 25 is illustrated in Fig. 1 as supported by the supports 36 resting within the notches 38, while as will be evident, upon returning said supports 36 to their seated positions asshown in Fig. 4, the inclined top section may be allowed to drop flatly positioning the same upon the top of the leaves 16. and to the exact size of which leaves the same corresponds. With the table unfolded in its operative position as illustrated in Fig. 1, the positioning of'the elements in their partially folded or closed positions as shown in Fig. 2 will be evident, in that the cottcrs 34 are moved upwardly, thus releasing the hinges between the leg sections which are then moved upon their hinges while the upper leg members 18 are folded upon their hinge bolts 27, the entire legs thus being positioned flatly engaging the lower faces of the leaves 16 and being inclos'ed within the sides of the two frames 11 while the entire frame being positioned beneath the leaves 16, the lock nuts are released for unlatch-' ing the latches 20 and the structure swung together upon the hinges 12 to the position shown in Fig. 3, and retained in such position by an engagement of the hook 39 w 19 so as to flatly engage on the top of the adjacent one of the leaves 16 while the leaf 23 is moved upon its hinges 24c to position the same over the ends of the frame sections 11 as folded and the terminal leaf 25 is moved upon its hinges 26 to lie flatly upon the face of the outer leaf 16 and the structure thus positioned is retained against unfolding by means of the hooks 41 carried by the outer edges of the half leaf 25 engaging pins 4:2 on the opposite outer edges of the outer leaf 16.
From this detailed description, the complete operation of adjusting the table structure will be apparent and in unfolding the same from its folded position as shown in Fig. 3 to either the fully extended position shown in full dotted lines in Fig. 1 or the inclined table structure shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
' While the forms of the invention herein shown and described are what are believed to be preferable embodiments thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that various forms and modifications may be had without departing from the spirit'and scope the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is 1. A device of the class described, comprising rectangular frame sections hingedly connected together, foldable leg members hingedto the opposite corners of said sections, two table leaves slidably-mounted upon said sections, three leaves hinged outwardly of said frame and positionable inclined above said first-named leaves, and pivoted supports" beneath the free edge of said inclined leaves.
2. A device of the class described,comprising a two-part rectangular table frame hingedly connected together, a top tenon upon the upper face of the said bars of said with said tenons and positionable thereon upon each hinged portion of said frame, an extension leaf outwardly hingedupon one of said leaves and provided with grooves on its lower face positionable in alinement with the grooves of said other leaves, one of said frame portions being shiftable to a position beneath said extension leaf, two half leaves hinged to the outer free edge of said extension leaf and adapted for positioning in alinelnent therewith, rigid retaining means between said two first-named leaves,
and two-parthinged leg supports pivoted 10 beneath said frame.
