ofwhich the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to fence posts and has for its object to provide a fence post formed of sheet metal of such thickness and weight as is most suitable for the purpose intended.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a metal fence post formed by rolling a sheet of sheet metal into a cylindrical form which tapers from its top throughout its length toward its bottom.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a, fence post of the above stated character which is of cheap and inexpensive construction. is durable and of substantial design and one to which any suitable form of fence may be readily and quickly attached. I
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a fence corner post of the above stated character which is adapted to be bracedby a brace ora pair of braces secured at their upper end or ends to a clamp arranged upon the corner post and secured at their lower end or ends to a base or a pair of bases embedded within the ground adiacent the corner post.
A still further object of the inventionis the provision of a corner post braced by suitable braces comprising a clamp arranged upon the post and a brace member adjustably connected with the clamp at one end thereof and having its other end removably supported upon a suitable base arranged within the ground.
With these and other objects in View as will appear. as the description proceeds, the invention "comprises the various novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the appended claims.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, A and B represent the end post and a fence line post respectively, upon which is supported a wire fence C which may be of any suitable construction. The line fence post B is of hollow cylindrical formand tapers from its upper toward its. lower end, clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. This fence line post B is constructed of sheet metal and is formed by rolling a sheet of sheet metal upon itself into cylindrical form, the free edges of which are slightly spaced apart. Just prior to the rolling of the fence line post into cylindrical form, the medial portion thereof is stuck outwardly at spaced intervals to provide a plurality of vertically extending wire engaging books 1 which are adapted to receive the longitudilindrical form, the free edges thereof being slightly spaced apart from one another, as The lower ground or may be secured in "a concrete base such as shown at 3'. The clamp 4 has formed at the forward side, or that side opposite to the clamping ears, a hook shaped projection 7, the outer contour thereof being of arcuate formation and provided medially with a notch 8 that extends inwardly of the hook. The head 9 of a T 10 is adapted to be disposed beneath the hook 7. When thehead 9 has been so arranged, the outer edge of the hook 7 is bent downwardly over the head 9 so that the shank 11 of the T seats within the notch 8 formed in the medial portion of the hook 7. From this it will be seen that the head of the T is securely fastened within the hook against vertical or lateral. displacement, and yet by reason of the notch 8 formed in the medial portion of the hook 7, the shank 11 of the 'li' may be moved vertically within the slot during the adjustment of the clamp and brace to the fence post. The lower end of the shank 11 of the 'l' is connected to a stop collar 12 which has projected from the opposite face thereof a. cylindrical stud 13 which is adapted to project into one end of a brace member 14: which in this instance is shown to be in the form of a pipe. The stop collar 12 serves to limit the inward movement of the cylindrical stu=l 13 within the end of the pipe 14:. The brace member 14: extends downwardly and has its end resting against a suitably formed base 15 arranged within the ground adjacent the fence'post A. This base 15 may be of cement, rock, or any other suitable material that will form a firm strong foundation for the brace member to rest upon. A supporting member 16 is arranged between the lower end of the brace member 14: and the base 15 and is shown to consist of a right angular or ii-shaped portion 17 adapted to overlie the upper edge of the base 15. Formed on the outer portion of the apex of this angular member is a stop collar 18 from which projects a stud 19, the latter extending into the lower end of the brace pipe 14, the stop collar 18 limiting theinward movement of the stud 19.
From the above it will be seen that I have provided a novel form of end fence post which is rigidly and strongly braced and one which can be readily set up or taken down when desired. In setting the brace up the supporting member 16 arrangedin the lower end of the brace pipe 14: is placed upon the upper edge of the base 15, the head 9. of the T 10 being arranged and disposed beneath the hook 7 of the clamp 4 where the outer edges of thehook 7 may be bent down and around the hook 9 of the T to effectively and securely hold the "l" within the hook 7 of the clamp 1 against vertical or lateral displacement, it being of course understood that the notch 8 formed in the medial por tion of the hook 7 of the clamp 4 allows sufiicient vertical adjustment of the clamp i,
or in other words, the head 9 of the 'll' 19 is permitted slight oscillatory movement within the hook 7 in adjusting the clamp to the desired position upon the fence post. v
With a construction such as described it will be apparent that I have provided means for securing or bracing a fence post of the above stated character in a very effective manner.
In Fig. 6 will be seen a modified form of brace adapted to be used upon fence corner posts. This form of brace is provided with laterally projecting hooks 24L and 25 which are disposed at right angles to one another upon the clamp 26. These hooks are identical in construction with the hooks 7 previously described and are formed and attached to the T in the same identical manner as those hereinbefore referredto.
By the construction of a clamp such as just described it will be apparent that I am enabled to securely and eii'ectively brace a fence corner post by a pair of brace mem bers 14. instead of a single one, as previ ously shown and described.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of construction and the method of operation will'be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the appended claims. Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is:
1. The combination with a fence post, of a clamp adjustably mounted upon the upper end of said fence post, said clamp being provided with a laterally projecting hook, a brace member having an enlarged angular head at one end for pivotal connection to said hook, and the other end of said brace member being removably supported upon a base arranged adjacent to the fence post.
2. The combination with a fence post, of a clamp adjustably mounted upon the upper end of said fence post, said clamp being provided with a laterally projecting hook, and a brace member having a T-shaped head at one end thereof, said head being pivotally connected to said hook, the other end of the brace member being removably supported upon a base arranged adjacent the fence 0st. p 3. The combination of a fence post, an adjustable clamp arranged upon the upper end of the fence post and provided with a laterally projecting hook, a brace member, a T having the head thereof disposed beneath the said hook andhairfngthe shank thereof detachably connected with one end posed beneath said hook and the shank thereof projected through the notch in said hook, the shank of the T being connected to the brace member, and means for supporting the other end of the brace member upon I a suitable base adjacent the fence post.
,5. The combination of a fence post, a clamp arranged upon the upper end of the fence post and provided with a laterally extending book, a brace pipe, a T having the head thereof disposed beneath the said hook, the shank of the T being provided with a stop collar and a projecting stud adapted to extend within the end of the brace pipe, and means for supporting the lower end of Copies of this the brace pipe upon a suitable base adjacent the fence post.
6. The combination of a fence post of hollow cylindrical form. an adjustable clamp arranged thereonkmd formed with a laterally extending hook having a notch formed in the medialportion thereof, a brace pipe, a T having the head thereof'disposedbeneath said hook whereby the outer' edge of the hook may be bent down and around the head to. secure and hold the latter for oscillation, the shank. of the T being movable in said notch and provided on its opposite end with a stop collar and a stud projecting therefrom and adapted to extend within the end of the brace pipe. and means for supporting theopposite end of the brace pipe upon a suitable base adjacent the fence ost. a p In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
