' BRAKESHQE Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEONARD ,E. HINKLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Millersburg, in the county of Holmes and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brake-Shoes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
I The invention relates to the wearing blocks or shoes used upon railway brakes, and its object is to provide certain new and useful improvements in brake shoes whereby the steel back and the cast iron body are fused together at all points of contact to prevent the parts from becoming separated when the brake shoe is in use. In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a cast metal body provided at its middle with spaced lugs, a steel back cast in the said body and provided with flanges cast into the said body lugs, and a steel loop extending across the said lugs and having its terminals cast into the said lugs. Use is also made of a coating of fusible metal for the said reinforcing steel back and the said loop to fuse the several parts together when casting the body of the brake shoe.

Figure 1 is a sectional side elevatlon of the steel back with part shown in section; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same; Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross section of the brake shoe back and the loop in position in the mold prior to pouring the molten metal for forming the body of the brake shoe; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross section of the brake shoe showing the back of the loop embedded in the body and fused thereto.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 5, the body A of the brake shoe or wearing block has embedded in its back portion a reinforcing back B, preferably of steel, and provided near the ends with openings B. The body A is provided at the middle of its back with spaced lugs A and the reinforcing back B is provided at its middle with a reduced portion B from which extend upwardly and the loop C is provided with inwardly-extending inclined flanges C embedded in the lugs A and in portions ofthe body A. By referenceto Fig. 5 it will be noticed that the flanges C are spaced from and are arranged outside of the flanges B of the reinforcing backB to provide an exceedingly strong reinforced seat for the key. In order to insure a fusing of the back B and the loop C in the cast metal of the body A, the said parts are provided'with coatings D and D, of a fusible metal, prior to placing the back B and the loop G into the mold into which the molten metal for the body A is to be poured with a view to embed the back B U v Patented Nov. 10,1914. From the foregoing it will be seen that by the arrangement described, the parts are very firmly united to prevent detachment of any one of the parts without the total destruction of the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. As an article of manufacture, a brake shoe having a cast metal body provided with central spaced lugs and reinforcing and supporting members both of which members and having their surfaces coated with a fusible material, whereby the parts may be firmly united without the application of force or pressure.

As an article of manufacture, a brake shoe having a ferreous body provided with central spaced lugs and a loop extending across the space between the lugs within the outer limits of the body, the end portions of the loop bodybeing extended laterally into the lugs and being provided with flanges in the said lugs and projecting toward and into the body, all for the purpose described.
.. 4. As an article of manufacture, a brake shoe having in its body asteel reinforcing coating serving to fuse the body and the reinforcing and supporting means together.-
5. As an article of manufacture, a brake shoehavlng a cast metalbody, a relnforclngr' back of steel embedded in the said body, a key lug having its terminals embedded in the said body, and coatings of fusible metal for the said back and lug to fuse the same to thebody.
6. As an article of manufacture, a brake shoe having a ferreous body andreinforcing and supporting inserts having both their inner and outer. surfaces coated With a fusi- 15 ble metal whereby the inserts and body may be firmly united Without the application of force or pressure.
