To all ywhom it y:n 0 1/ concern Be it known that i, FnANk O. HOAGLAND, a. citizen'of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented :in improvement in l\'lushroom-Bullets, (Case 3,) of which the following is a speciiication.

This invention relates to full covered or jacketed bullets of the class in which the body cover and the tip cover are made separate, and has for its object to provide a bullet of this type`r which, while retaining all the properties of ordinaryV covered bullets, will mushroom, i. e. fiatten out. upon impact. This result I accomplish by making cuts ent-irely through the metal of the tip cover but with the edges closed together which cuts may be made. in various different forms, the effect of which is to weaken the cover withoutremoving metal therefrom, leaving the core covered, so that the bullet with the exception of the cuts will have the appearance of an ordinary covered bullet and may be handled like an ordinary full covered bullet, but will, upon impact with an objective, mushroom similarly to an ordinary soft nosed bullet, the tip cover opening out like anA umbrella.

The gist' of the invention lies in weaken` mg the independent tip cover by means of cuts through it in order to cause the tip cover to open out like an umbrella upon impact of the bullet with an objective. in Figs. l and 2, l have shown the tip cover as weakened by a plurality of cuts 13 arranged in longitudinal alinement. In Figs. 3 and l, l have shown the tipA cover ae weakened by a plurality uof circumferential cuts l5 in continuous alinement without breaking joints. ln F ig 5 and 6, I have shown the tip cover as weakened by a greater number of circumferential eutslG made shorter and arranged to break joints. It is wholly immaterial so far as the pres- -ent invention is concerned whether the rear end of the tig cover overlaps the front endl of the body cover, as in Fig. E), or the rear end of the tip cover is closed inward and core metal forced between the covers, as in Fig. l0. A
