Liiiee.
To all ywhom it y:n 0 1/ concern Be it known that i, FnANk O. HOAGLAND, a. citizen'of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented :in improvement in l\'lushroom-Bullets, (Case 3,) of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to full covered or jacketed bullets of the class in which the body cover and the tip cover are made separate, and has for its object to provide a bullet of this type`r which, while retaining all the properties of ordinaryV covered bullets, will mushroom, i. e. fiatten out. upon impact. This result I accomplish by making cuts ent-irely through the metal of the tip cover but with the edges closed together which cuts may be made. in various different forms, the effect of which is to weaken the cover withoutremoving metal therefrom, leaving the core covered, so that the bullet with the exception of the cuts will have the appearance of an ordinary covered bullet and may be handled like an ordinary full covered bullet, but will, upon impact with an objective, mushroom similarly to an ordinary soft nosed bullet, the tip cover opening out like anA umbrella.
the accompanying` drawing forming a.
pari. of this speciiication: Figures l., 3, and
form in which the overlaps the front dependent means for retaining the tip cover in 'place 4upon the tapering portion o f the bullet; Fig. l0 a sectional view showing a form in which J[he rear end of the tip cover is closed inward and metal of the core is forced between -the contiguous ends of the two covers; Fig. ll a view partly in elevation and partly in sect-ion illustrating the rst effect. upon the bullet, of impact with an objective, and Fig. l2 is a view showing the bullet completely mushroomed, the tip cover having been opened out over the metal of the forward portion of the core in the manner of an umbrella. The views are all on a greatly enlarged scale.

l0 denotes the core of my novel bullet, ll the body cover and l2 the tip cover. The gist' of the invention lies in weaken` mg the independent tip cover by means of cuts through it in order to cause the tip cover to open out like an umbrella upon impact of the bullet with an objective. in Figs. l and 2, l have shown the tip cover as weakened by a plurality of cuts 13 arranged in longitudinal alinement. In Figs. 3 and l, l have shown the tipA cover ae weakened by a plurality uof circumferential cuts l5 in continuous alinement without breaking joints. ln F ig 5 and 6, I have shown the tip cover as weakened by a greater number of circumferential eutslG made shorter and arranged to break joints. In Figs. T- and S, I have shown the tip cover'as weakenedl by a plurality of vl-shaped cuts 17.
It is wholly immaterial so far as the pres- -ent invention is concerned whether the rear end of the tig cover overlaps the front endl of the body cover, as in Fig. E), or the rear end of the tip cover is closed inward and core metal forced between the covers, as in Fig. l0. A
In the form illustrated in Fig. 9,' as a means of insuring the retention of'the tip cover upon the tapering portion of the bullet, l preferably strike in holding points 20 from the metal. of the tip cover and force said points into the core, as clearly shown.
rEhe elfect of the weakening of the tip cover by makingv cuts therein, upon timpact of the bullet. with an objective is clearly indic-ated in'Figs. 1 1 and l2. rlhe body portion of the. bullet and the body cover will telescope the tapering portion of the bullet, as indicated. in Fig. 1l, the tip cover Lbeing ruptured and opening out like an umbrella.

A bullet comprising u core, a body l thereof and the tip cover will loe ruptured cover and' a separate tip cover, the tip cover und opened out like an umbrella. 10 being weakened by the formation therein of In testimony whereof I aliX my signature a plurality of longitudinal cuts entirely in presence of two Witnesses.
through said cover but with the edges closed FRANK O. HOAGLAND. together, leaving the core substantially cov- Ntnessesz ered, so that upon impact the body portion WILLIAM M. THOMAS,
of the bullet will telescope the forward end EDWARD H. ALLEN.
