UNITEDW STATES PATENT OFFICE. a
. msnou DENT ivroonnor ARDMORE, OKLAHOMA.
CAR-DOOR-SEALING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RISDON D. Moons, of.
Ardmore, in the county ofGarter and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-Door-Sealing Devices; and I hereby declare that the" following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification. I i
This invention is a novel improvement in railway cars and its object is to provide novelmeans for tightly sealing the car doors so as to protect the contents of thecar from damage by rain, dirt, fire, etc., which might enter from the outside of the car; and also to effectively retain any fine materials in the car. j
Another object of the invention is to pro vide such a sealing device which can be applied to an ordinary freight car door with very little expense.
I will explain the invention in detail in.
connection with the accompanying drawings Which illustrate one embodiment of the invention applied to an ordinary freight car door, and which will suflice to impart a clear understanding of the nature and object of the invention and the essential features thereof, and a practical means of utilizing same.
In said drawings-Figure 1 is a front View of a freight car door equipped with my novel sealing device; showing the devices 1n retracted pos1t1on in full lines. Fig.
'2 is a detail view of the sealing devices in sealing position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section on line 44, Fig. 2.
I have illustrated the invention as applied to an ordinary wooden box car door which may be of any suitable construction, and is shown assuspended by hangers 1 from a bar 1 extendingabove the top edge of the door opening, the hangers being such that the door may be swung slightly outward from the door frame and then moved edge wise to one side of the door opening, along the side of the car in the well known manner.
Mounted on the door adjacent the edges thereof which it is desired to seal, are sealing plates 2, each of which lies preferably against the outer face of the door, adjacent an edge thereof; and preferably four such plates are employed respectively at thetop,
Specification of Letters Patent.

bottom and front rear edges of the. door. These plates arepreferably made of sheet steel and laterally movable, and are fastened to the door by suitablezmeans, as t by bolts 2 engaging transverse slots 2 in the platesas shown. The bolts and slots allow the plates to be moved laterally toward and from the edges of the door, and at i the same time hold them securely thereto. Any other suitable means for holding the plates in this manner canbe used. a
The plates may be simultaneously moved inwardly or outwardly by suitable means.
As shown aijclisk 3 is pivotally mounted up on astud or bolt 3 attached to the outer face of the door and preferably at the center thereof this disk may be wheel-shaped fora.
lightness and isprovided with a radially projectingarm 3" by whichit can be turned. Connected to this disk at points apart a are links lwhich may be bifurcated at their outer ends, and the extremities of thebi' furcations 4L pivoted to the several plates 2, as indicated at 4 the constructionis such that when the disk 3 is turned in one direction all the plates 2 will be simultaneously 1 retracted or drawn inwardly toward the disk, and if the disk is turned in the opposite direction the plates will be simultaneously projected or moved outward away from the;
isk. i l i The plates may be held in projected position by fastening the arm 3 in any suitable way, as by engagingbthe arm. 3" with a retainer 5 having a hinged upper piece 5 which can be locked after the arm is engaged.
therewith, drawings.
At the edges of the door opening,or opposite each plate 2 on the door, may be metal plates 6, which will not interfere withthe seating of the door in its place when the plates 2 are retracted.
As shown loops 7 are attached to the car adjacent the door opening, and the bifurcations 4* project beyond the outer edges of as indicated in Fig. 1 of (the v edges of the door; and such sealing devices can be applied to any ordinary form of car door.
That I claim is: 1. In combination with a car door, laterally movable plates attached to the door adjacent each edge thereof, a pivoted lever,v
links on the same side of the door as saidmovable plates connecting said lever with each of the plates and having their outer the door frame and door at the meeting edges thereofwhen the links are projected, substantially as described.-
2. In combination with a freight car door,
laterally movable plates attached to the door adjacent each edge thereof, a lever pivoted on the door, and links on the same side of the door as said movable plates connecting said lever with each plate to simultaneously project or retract the latter when the lever is rocked, said links having wedge-shaped ends extended beyond the plates; with devices at 'tached to the door frame'adjacent the door a and opposite each lever end and adapted to be engaged by the wedge-shaped ends of the levers and press the plates closely against the door frame and door at the meeting edges thereof when the links are projected, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
