UNITED sTATus PATENT oFFroE.
EDWIN N. FRIEDMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED DESK AND CHAIR.
mosses.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN N. FRIEDMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Combined Desk and Chair, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an article of furniture and more particularly to a combined table and chair.
The object of the present invention is to provide a chair with a table secured thereto at the front thereof which is adapted to be used in dairy lunch rooms and similar places.
Another object is to provide means where by the table may be tilted and used as a reading table.
A further object is to provide means whereby the seat of the chair may be folded against the back or detached therefrom.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part thereof, the preferable form of my invention is illustrated, in which Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved combined table and chair. Fig. 2 is a side view in elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a fragmental view in perspective showing the chair seat as being hingedly connected to the chair back. Fig. 4 illustrates the man ner in which the table is hingedly mounted and may be locked in any desired position.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 is a chair seat and 2 a back therefor.
The numeral 3 represents suitable supporting legs to which the seat and back are secured. A. second pair of supporting legs 4 are positioned in front of the legs 3 and support the table 5 in front of and above the seat 1. The legs 3 and 4: are rigidly secured by means of suitable cross struts or rungs 6, said rungs 6 being positioned upon one side only of the chair table combination Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 27, 1913.
Patented June 16, 1914. Serial No. 744,565.
in order that the other side thereof is open for the entrance of the occupant.
The form as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 is especially adapted for lunch rooms, restaurants and has the advantage that the table 5 is positioned directly in front of the occupant rather than to one side thereof as is the usual construction in furniture of this character.
In order that the entrance to the seat is made more easy and that the occupant will have little or no trouble in assuming aposition therein or departing therefrom, the form as illustrated is Fig. 3 is provided in which the legs 3 are extended upward and provided with the longitudinal slots 7. These longitudinal slots 7 are provided with an enlarged portion 8 preferably circular in outline as illustrated into which are ada )ted l to fit the projecting lugs 9 secured to the seat 1. By this means the seat 1 may be folded upward against the back and in order that the seat 1 may fold into contact with the back of the chair, the lugs 9 are formed at an angle with the surface of the seat 1. The ends of the projecting lugs 9 are preferably spherical in outline and adapted to travel within and be retained by the restricted portions of the slots 7. Suitable brackets 10 are positioned beneath the seat and serve to limit the downward swinging movement of the seat to a. horizontal position.
In order that the table may be used as a reading desk or for similar purposes, the form illustrated in Fig. 4: is provided with a projection extending from one side thereof, the said projection extending within a spherical opening formed in the legs 4. The opposite side of the table therefrom is pro vided with a bolt 12 extending through a suitable opening in the leg 4 and a wing set screw 13 is secured to the said bolt and adapted to contact with the outer surface of the leg 4- to thereby provide means whereby the table 5 may be locked in any desired position of angularity. The table 5 in the form illustrated in Fig. 4 is provided with a tray or drawer 14 positioned therebeneath and the said drawer is adapted to serve in the usual capacity of such a device.
From the foregoing it will be apparen that in my improved article of furniture, it may be used as a combined table and chair in which the table portion thereof is adapted to swing or be inclined to any convenient po sition and furthermore that suitable means more, the seat may be entirely detached from Q the back portion of the chair in order that the same may be repaired or for any other similar purpose.
A cheap, simple and eflicient structurehas been disclosed in which acombined table and chair has been provided, the table and chair being supported by four legs.
ture as disclosed will be'a strong-"and rigid one and combines a minimum number of parts.
Having thus fully disclosed the construction of my improved article of furniture,
what I claim to be new and original with me 1s':-
An article of manufacture including two upright posts provided with longitudinally extending undercut slots therein terminating in enlarged upper portions, a seat, a pair of angle members secured to the top and rear edgeof said seat and spaced apart a distance equal to the spacing of the said The structo fit within the enlarged portions of said 1 slots and to be retained in the restricted under portions thereof, the upward inclination of the lugs allowing the said seat to rotate 5 about the enlarged heads with the two portions of the angle members contacting with the posts and holding the seat out of contact therewith when in its horizontal or vertical position, and stops rigidly secured to the vertical posts projecting horizontally there from spaced a slight distance below 'the lower extremity of the said slots and adapted to support the said seat in a horizontal position, said seat adapted to move bodily upwardly for the detachment thereof from the said posts.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the'presen'ce of two witnesses.
