To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, HAMILTON C. Moon- MAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers, of which the following is a.

specification.

My invention relates to improvements in containers and has for its object the production of a device of this character which will be of durable and economical construction and efiicient in use.

Otherobjects will appear hereinafter.

With these objects in view my invention conof parts hereinafter described and claimed. The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1- isa topplan view of a container embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a .section taken on substantially line 00-00 of Fig. 1, the lower portion of the container bein shown in elevation, Fig. 3 is an enlarge detail section taken on line y-y of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 illustrating a different position of the fastening means which serve to secure the reinforcing bands to the body of the container, and Fig. 5 illustrates the preferred formation ofthe reinforcing bands of-the container.

The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a cylindrical body or lateral wall 1 which is formed of cardboard, paper,\ wo od or other suitable material. The ends of the body 1 are open and are reinforced by metallic bands 2 which fit snugly within said ends, the inner edges of said bands being formed with in- 7 wardly turned annular flanges 3 which serve to support the circular heads 4 of the container. The bands 2 are formed at their outer edges with outwardly pro ecting ears 5 certain of which engage over the edges of the body 1 as clearly shown in the several views, the remaining ears being bent inwardly to engage over. the peripheral portions of the heads 4 in order to secure the latter in position. Nails or tacks 6 are employed in conjunction with the last mentioned ears in order to securely fasten the same to heads 4 as clearly shown in Fig. 2.

means of rivets or other suitable securing devices 7 which pass through the ears 5embracing the edges of said body, as clearly shown .thereof through which the rivet passes will be formed with an inwardly turned bur 9 which pierces the body .1 and thus serves to more securely fasten the parts together.

At each end of the-container is provided an exteriorly positioned band 10 which is positioned over the outwardly turned ears 5 serving to securely hold the latter in position, the bands 10 being secured in position by means of nails 11, each of said nails passing through the band, the corresponding ear 5, the body 1, the band 2 and into the corresponding head 4 as clearly shown'in Fig. 3. Said nails thus serve not only to secure the bands 10 in position but also as a means of securely locking the various parts together. Y K

In the manufacture ofthe container the bands 2 will preferably be formed as shown in Fig. 5, said bands as here shown bein provided with ears 5 which are so spaced that the bands may be stamped out in pairs with the ears 5 of the members of each pair positioned between each other. terial, none whatever being wasted. In Fig. 5 the lines upon which the bands 2 are bent in order to form the flanges 3 thereof are in dotted lines at 3 the dotted lines 5 shown in this figure indicating the lines of bending of the ears 5.

A'container of the construction set forth possesses rigidity and durability and because of the simple and economical. construction thereof may be manufactured at a low cost.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for cafrying. myinvention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departingfrom the spirit of "the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of-construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come .within the scope of the appended claims.

'Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A container comprising a body, a band fitting within the end of said body, a head, an annular flange on the inner edge of said band adapted to support said head and a plurality of tongues on the opposite edge of said band, certain of said tongues being secured to said body and others of said. tongues being bent downwardly over, said. head to hold the same in position on said flange, substantially as described.

2. A container comprising a body, a band fitting within the end of said body, a head, an annular flange on the inner edge of said band adapted to support said head and a plurality of tongues on the opposite edge of said band, certain of said tongues being bent over the edge of said body and secured thereto, and others of said tongues being bent downwardly over said head to hold the same in position on said flange, substantially as described.

3. A container comprising a body, a band fitting within the end of said body, a head, an annular flange on the inner edge of said band adapted to support said-head and a plurality of tongues on the opposite edge of said band, certain of said tongues being bent over the edge of said body upon the outer face thereof and. fastening means extending through said. tongues, the adjacent portion of the body and into said head, and others of said tongues being bent downwardly over said head and secured thereto, substantially as described.

A container comprising a body, a band fitting within the end of said body, a head, an annular flange on the inner edge of said band adapted to support said head, a plnrality of tongues on the opposite'edge of said band, certain of said tongues being bent over the edge of said body upon the outer face thereof and others of said tongues being bent downwardly over said head, a reinforcing band encircling the outer ends of the first mentioned tongues and securing means extending through the last said band,

said tongues, the adjacent portion of the body, the first mentioned band and into said head, substantially as described.

5. A container comprlsing a cylindrical body open at both ends; heads at said ends of said body; a reinforcing band fitting,

snugly within said body at each end thereof; an inwardly projecting flange at the inner edge of each of said bands for supporting the corresponding head; and outwardly proj ecting ears at the outer edges of said bands, some of said ears embracing the adjacent edges of said body, and others of said ears engaging over the adjacent edges of said heads to hold the latter in position, substantially as described.
