Application filed May 25,1915. Serial No. 30,262.
T 0 all 1071 cm it may concern Be it known that I, TVVALLACE R. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Olean, in the county of Cattaraugus and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Knife, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in knives and has for an object the provision of an improved lock for holding a knife positively open when moved to that positlon.
Another object is to provide a lock actuated by the usual spring of a knife for engagement with the blade of the knife and a disengaging lever for throwing out of operation the spring in order to allow the blade to freely swing for permitting a ready closing thereof.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a side view of a knife embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the structure shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 except the blade is shown open; Fig. 1 is a side view of the knife, certain parts broken away and the blade being partially closed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 indicates the ordinary blade of a knife which blade is, however, provided with a special socket 2 having shoulders 8 and l. The blade 1 is pivotally mounted on a pin or shaft 5 in the usual manner and is formed with a round end 6. The sides 7 and 8 receive the ends of pin 5 and properly hold the pin and blade 1 in correct position so that the blade may be moved into and out of the handle in the usual manner. Connected with the sides 7 and 8 is a spring 9 formed with a squared extension or lug 10 designed to fit into the notch or socket 2 and with a raised portion 11 for receiving a pin 12. Pin 12 passes through a. pivotally mounted thumb memberlB which is formed with a cam surface 1&- and with a friction member 15 acting somewhat as a cam so that the member 13 will normally remain in the position shown in Fig. 2 unless positively removed therefrom.
lVhen it is desired to open the knife from the position shown in Fig. 2, the blade 1 is grasped in the usual manner, the rounded end 6 sliding over theextension 10 which preferably bears against the same. The rounded end 6 is arranged eccentrically with regard to the pin 5 so that as the knife is opened the spring 9 is bowed backwardly until the lug or extension 10 snapsinto socket 2,. whereby the blade 1 is locked in the position shown in Fig. 3. The blade cannot he accidentally removed from this position by reason of the squared structure of lug 10 and the socket 2.
lVl'ien it is desired to close the knife the handle is grasped, as shown in Fig. 4, and the thumb of the operator presses on the outer end of the lever 18, whereupon the cam 14: will engage the sides 7 and 8 and raise the lug 10 out of socket 2, whereby the blade may be closed easily, as the same is perfectlyfree to swing. After the blade is moved to substantially the position shown in Fig. l spring 9 is released and lug 10 thereupon bears against the rounded end 6, but this will not prevent the ready closing oft-he blade but will give sufficient tension for holding the blade closed.
It is to be observed that the knife is provid ed with a single spring which acts in the usual manner of springs for holding the blade open and closed but which also acts as means for holding the locking member onlug 10 in its locked position.
WVhat I claim is 1. A knife, comprising a handle, a. blade pivotally mounted in said handle, said blade being formed with a notch, a spring arranged in the back of said handle formed with a. lug adapted to fit into said handle when said blade is open, said spring being formed also with a projection on the opposite side thereof to said lug, and a lever pivotally mounted on said projection formed with a. cam surface on the face opposite that engaging the handle whereby the lever must be turned completely over before the cam will engage said handle for raising said spring and with it said lug so as to disengage the lug from said notch.
2. A. knife comprising a handle, a blade pivotally mounted in said handle, said blade having a notch in the shank thereof on the side opposite to the back when the blade is closed, a. spring arranged on said back formed with a lug, said lug being adapted to be forced into said notch by said spring WllGIl the blade is open, said'spring being In testimony whereof I have signed my formed With a projection on the back therename to this specification in the presence of of, and a lever member pivotally mounted two subscribing Witnesses.
- on said spring projection, said lever being WALLACE RUSSELL BROWN. 5 formed With a cam' engaging said handle Witnesses: v i
