Be it known that I, ARTHUR S. WELDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toronto, in the county of York and Prov'- ince of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and' herein described one form of device embodying my invention.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a holder embodying my invention, it being shown as supported on a wall; Fig. 2 a rear view of the holder; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the holder and pad; Fig. 4l is a fragmentary sectional view similar to Fig. 3' but somewhat enlarged; Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 6; Fig. 6 is a front view of the holder showing a bill slip behind the spring clip; Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the memoranda pad removed.

In the drawings, 1 indicates a frame preferably formed from sheet metal. The frame 1 may be flanged along its opposite longitudinal edges, as shown at 1, the flanges serving to strengthen the frame from end to end. The flanges also formA side walls between which the bill slips, indicated at 2, are arranged. The side walls or flanges 1a operate to maintain the slips 2 in order, one on top of the other, in superposed position.

At its upper end the frame 1 is formed with an opening 1 by means of which the holder may be hung on a hook or nail as shown in Fig. 1.

Near the upper portion of the frame, it is formed with one or more transverse cuts or slits 1b. There are preferably two slits or cuts 1b of equal length and arranged parallel to'each other in order to provide a section of metal 1" between them which can be flexed or pressed laterally slightly. The slits 1b may be of a width to permit a backing of relatively thick material, such as tag board, to be passed through them. At its opposite ends each slity or cut 1b is enlarged, as indicated at 1d, the walls of the enlarged portions being preferably circular in contour to prevent tearing of the metal when the section 1bl is iieXed. These openings 1dl also permit the backing tobe freely inserted or removed without binding.r Y

3 indicates a spring clip of any suitable construction, but preferably of skeleton form, and, asV shown, a portion ofthe clipsV mpinges or presses against th'eframe, or an intervening backing, between the slits 16 therein.

The clip 8, which I have chosen for illustration in the drawing, is formed of resilient wire and comprises a pair of legs 3a connected together at their upper ends.y The lower ends of the legs 3a terminate in coils 3b and the opposite free ends of the wire eX- tend through apertures 1c formed in the back of the frame 1 and are then bent up and against the opposite face of the frame. As will be understood from the drawing, the coils 3b normally operate to swing the legs 8a toward the frame 1 and are placed 'under tension when swung outwardly to permit the insertion of a bill slip behind the clip or the removal of they slip therefrom.

f 4l indicates a pad mounted on the rear side of the holder frame 1. This pad may be of any preferred form of construction. The form of pad chosen for illustration comprises a backing ta-and a plurality of superposed slips of paper lb secured to one end of the backing 4a by one or more staples lc in ay well known manner. The backing 4a may be formed of relatively stiff material, such as tagboard. The slips of paper l" may be weakened along a transverse line ld in a well known way-such as a line of perforations-to permit the ready detachment of the slips from the pack when it is desired to remove them. n

The pad l is removably secured to the holder frame by inserting the backing'lla through one or both of the slits 1b as shown in the drawings. The backing Lla is preferably inserted through both slips v1b in order that the pad may besecurely mounted on the holder frame l and also to leave the front face of the frame free to accommodate a large number of bill slips. When the backing 4EL of the pad 4 is inserted through the slits lb the section of metal is slightly flexed in a well known manner, the material of the frame lb preferably being of a character to permit this operation. The metal oi' the frame may be stamped or pressed laterally so that it is normally disposed in the position shown in Figs. 8 and 4; but preferably it is normally disposed in the plane of the frame back so that when the section of the metal is flexed to permit the insertion of the backing 4a, the resiliency of the metal may be utilized to grip the backing 4EL between theopposite side edges of the section 1b and the adjacent edges of the frame l. This form of construction forms a yieldable means for securing the padv to the holder frame. Y

The frame l is preferably formed with a centrally arranged cut-away portion or recess le in its lower edge. As shown in the drawings this cut-awayv portion extends inwardly to a point beyond the free edges of the slips 2, supported by the clips, and 4b, form-` ing the pad. rilhe purpose of this construc- V tion is to permit the fingers of an operative to easily grip the lower edges of the slips for manipulating or removing one or more of them as may be desired. In some instances the backing 4c may terminate at a point above the lower edges of the slips 4b (see the dotted line in Fig. 2) to facilitate their detachment.

My holder and pad is particularly adapted for use in connection with a one-writing, forwarding, duplicating system of keeping credit accounts where the customer at each sale is furnished with a bill slip 2 on which the transaction is recorded. The customer is provided with a holder l in which the bill slips 2 received from the merchant are placed. The pad 4 may be used in various ways in connection with the account; for instance, memoranda of articles to be ordered may be written thereon and the slips detached from the pad when the articles are ordered, or in special cases a memorandum can be entered on a slip and the slip detached and placed behind the clip 3 where it can .be plainly seen. If the pad 4 is a duplicating one, the duplicate copy of the memorandum can be given to the merchant for his keeping.

The frame 1 forms a strong base member so that memoranda can be easily written on the pad without detaching the slips therefrom; and the pressure of the spring clip against thebacking onthe face of the frame between the slits, serves to hold all the parts in proper position while being handled for this purpose.;

n To those Skilled in aie/art of making de! vices of the class described, many alterations in construction and widely differing embodiments and applications of my invention will suggest themselves, without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. My disclosures and the description herein are purely illustrative, and are not intended to bein any sense limiting.

What claim is:

1.7A device of the character described comprising a frame and a spring clip swingably mounted on one face of the frame and arranged to support papers thereon, the said frame being formed with a slit through which the backing of a pad is adapted to be inserted to removably secure the pad to said frame, and the spring clip being arranged to impinge on the inserted. portion of the backing'.

2. A device of the character described comprising a frame, a spring clip mounted on one side thereof and arranged to support bills on said frame, and a pad removably mounted on the other side of the frame, the lower edge of the frame being` cut-away to form a recess extending inwardly beyond the lower edges of said pad, and the bills supported by said clip.

3. A device of the character described comprising a frame and a springl clip swingablymounted on one face of the iframe and arranged to support papers thereon, the said frame being formed with a pair of slits spaced from and arranged parallel to each other, the said slits being adapted to receive a backing for a pad to secure the pad to said frame, and the spring clip being arranged to impinge on the inserted portion of the backing. v

4. A device of the character described comprising a metal frame and a spring clip swingably mounted on one face of the frame and arranged to support papers thereon, the said frame 'being formed with a pair of slits spaced from and arranged parallel to each other, the said slits being adapted to receive a backing for a pad to secure the pad to said frame and the spring clip being arranged to impinge on the inserted portion of the backing, the metal of the frame being,r resilient, whereby the section of metal between the slits yieldably secures the backing to the frame.

5. A i device of the character described comprising a sheet metal frame formed with a pair of slits, the said slits being enlarged at their opposite ends and permitting a backing for a pad to be inserted through them to secure-the pad to the frame, and a spring clip secured to one face of said frame for holding papers thereon, and impinging on the frame between the slits.

6. A device of the character described comprising `a sheet metal frame flanged along its opposite longitudinal edges and CIK formed with a pair of slits,- the said slits being enlarged at their opposite ends and permitting a backing for a pad to be inserted through them to secure the pad to the frame, and a spring elip secured to one face of said frame for holding the papers thereon, and impinging on the frame between the slits.

7. A device of the character described comprising a frame formed with a transversely extending slit adapted to receive a backing for a pad, whereby the pad may be removably secured to one side of the frame, and a spring clip mounted on the other side of the frame for securing papers thereto, the lower edge of the frame being formed with a. recess extending inwardly to a point beyond the lower edges of the slips on the frame and of the pad to permit the manipulation and removal of the same.

9. A device of the character described comprising a sheet metal frame flanged along its opposite longitudinal edges and having a pair of slits therein for receiving the backing of a pad, the lower end of the frame being formed with a recess extending inwardly to a point beyond the lower edge of the pad to permit the manipulation and removal of the same, and a spring olip for holding papers on the frame between the flanged edges thereof on the side opposite the pad.
