COMBINATION COPY-HOLDER, BOOK-HOLDER, &o.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23, 1915.
Application filed October 24, 1911. Serial No. 656,434.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LATHAM PUTNAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corning, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Copy-Hold ers, Book-Holders, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means whereby a newspaper, book, or the like may be sup ported in a suitable position.
Another object of my invention is to provide means adapted to support a newspaper, book, or the like which is constructed of heavy wire in such a manner as to be easily manufactured.
With the foregoing and other objects in view my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail referenoe will be had to the oflicial'drawings wherein like characters denote like and corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved support. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view.
In the drawings I have shown the body portion of the device at 1, the ends of which are bent as shown at 2, 3, 4, and 5 whereby the same may be supported. Connected to the body portion 1 at 2 is a suitable sheet metal member 6, which has its side bent as shown at 7 whereby pencils, pens, or the like may be held thereon, however a book or the like may be rested thereon. Connected to the body portion 1 are the reinforcing wires 8, some of which are bent as shown at 9. Connected to the top of the body portion 1 and to the member 6 are the rods 10 which lie in the depressed portions 9 of the Wires 8. A book, paper, or the like may be rested upon the wires 8, the bottom of the same resting upon the member 6'. I however, have devised means whereby a book, or whatever article is held thereon may be held open. This means is slidable upon the rods 10 and is constructed as will be hereinafter fully described, my improved means for holding the book or paper in an open position, in the present instance comprising a wire strand 11, the opposite ends of which are convoluted as indicated at 12 and slidably arranged on the parallel rod 10, the latter being sufliciently spaced from the depressed portion 9 of the rods 8 in order to permit said convoluted ends 12 of the strand 11 to be freely movable thereon, said strand being provided, adjacent the opposite ends thereof with resilient coils 13 through the medium of which the body'portion of the strand 11 is held snugly in engagement with the book or paper at all times. The strand 11 is arched midway its ends as indicated at 14: and is adapted for the reception of the bulged portion of a book, when the latter is in an open position, likewise serving as a handle to facilitate actuation of the strand on said rods 10; In operation thereof, it is seen that the strand 11 is adjustable on the rod 10 so as to be adaptable for use with books or papers of various sizes, since when pressure is exerted on the strand 11, it is seen that the convolutions 12 will be actuated on therods 10, consistent with the direction in which the pressure is exerted.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction of my device without departing from the spirit of my invention, provided such changes fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described including a substantially rectangular frame formed from a single strand of wire and having one of the sides thereof removed, the ends of said strand being extended forwardly, downwardly and rearwardly to provide a base, for holding said frame at an inclination, vertically and horizontally arranged strands of wire carried by said frame, parallel rods mounted on said frame, clamping means adj ustably mounted on said rods, said horizontally arranged strands provided with depressed portions therein subjacent said parallel rods to permit of the actuation of said clamping m ans on said rods, and a plate arranged on the forwardly extended portions of said ends, said plate being longitudinally grooved adjacent one of its longitudinal edges substantially as specified.
2. In a combination copy holder and book holder including a frame, vertically and horizontally arranged wires secured to the frame, rods carried by the frame in spaced parallel relation and means for clamping a copy or book on said Vertically and horizonparallel rods to permit said clamping means tally arranged Wires comprising a Wire to be freely actuated on said parallel rods.
