Specification bf Letters Patent.
Patented July 20, 11915.
Application lled September 29, 1914. Serial N o. 864,091.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, MACK W. BRIDGES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicora, in the county of Wayne and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to oars and parti cularly to bow facing oar locks.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an oar lock which may be conveniently attached to the side of any row boat and in which the blade handle end of a severed oar may be placed so that the operator can row the boat facing the direction of movement.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure l is a top plan view. Fig. 2 is an end elevation. Fig. 3 is a side elevation.
Referring more particularly lto the drawing, 1 represents a substantially U-shaped double bracket, the long legs of which are connected together by a brace or connector i Gopies of this patent may be obtained for iire cents each, by addressing the 2 while the short legs are provided with a threaded aperture to receive the set screws 3. This bracket is secured to 'the side of the boat, as will be readily understood, and has pivoted to the upwardly extended 'ears 4 thereof a supporting frame 5 having oppositely extending arms 6 whoseterminals are raised above the plane of the body of the frame and have pivotally mounted thereon the bell crank levers 7, the inner or vlong legs of which are connected by a link 8. Both levers 7 are formed in the same manner and have their outer ends provided with sockets 9 to receive the blade and handle end of the oar 10. The oar may have its separate sections secured in the sockets in any suitable manner either removably or permanently, as will be readily understood, and is of ordinary construction, it being preferable to simply cut an ordinary oar into two parts and insert the ends of the respective parts in the sockets.
What is claimed is A bow facing oar lock comprising a pair of U-shaped members adapted to straddle the side of the boat, means for connecting the U-shaped members to the boat, a supporting member pivoted between the U- shaped members and having oppositely eX- tending arms, Athe terminals of which are raised above the vplane of the supporting member, bell crank levers pivoted to the outer ends of said arms and having'their outer ends provided with oar receiving sockets, a'link connecting the inner ends of said levers, and handle and blade oai" sections mounted in the sockets of the levers. In testimony whereof I. affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
