Description

W. L. SWARTZ.,
HREARM. APPLICATION FILED MAH.24. 1914.
Patented J une 1, 1915.
TEA S7 WILLIAM L. swnnrz,
' OF UTICA, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
Specication of Lette'rs Patent.
Patented June i, 1915.
Application fileareh 24, 1914. Serial No. 826,883.
To all whom it may' concern Be it known that I, lILLIAM L. SWARTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Firearms, of which.
meditated ring.
I aim to provide a simple and efficient safety locking means for a gun of the character of that set forth in the patent to Searle, No. 936,369, but the invention is to be understood as applicable to any gun wherein the manually actuated controlling portion of the improved means is adaptable to form with a part of the gun frame the grip of the gun.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side elevation of the improved gun, showing certain parts broken away and others in section, the safety means being in the position for allowing the gun to loe-fired Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevation of thegun, showing said means in the locking position; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of a part of said means; and, Fig. 4 is a'plan view of said means and a part of the firing-mechanism-including train.
The gun frame a; barrel o; sliding breech structure c having the removable plug d; the firing-mechanism-including train of parts comprising, with the cooking lever e pivoted in plu d and having connected therewith the ring-pin '(not shown), the Sear f, the Sear-trip g and trigger 7i, and the rod or bar i arranged to slide in a horizontal guideway shown in one side of the frame and connected with the scar-trip; and the pivoted detent y' movable to the horizontal position, to lock the breech-structure and cooking lever and obstruct the sliding movement of' bar c' and so block the firing movement of the firing train, and to the vertical position to release these parts (in the case of the firing train, having a hole lc to receive the rear end of said rod and thereby permit its sliding movement) are or may be all substantially the same as in the patent to Lang No. 1082961.
ln the present instance the rear end of the bar z' is forked, one leg i of such forked portion being adapted to abut the detent j or register with its hole 7c, according to the position of the detent, and th; other leg fi being arranged inwardly lateL al of the leg i.
As shown in Fig. 1 a space exists between the rear end of leg i and the opposite face j of the detent j. rIlhis space is adapted to receive a lug l on the upper end of a vertically sliding angular bar fm. whose upperl half (approximately) lm. is outwardly oset with respect to its lower half fm/; the upper half m of this bar moves in a guideway or slot n formed in the same side of the frame as and meeting the guideway for the bar z', the outer surface thereof being substantially flush with the corresponding surface of the frame so that the handle portion of the detent j may overlap it when oecupying the position shown in the drawing, while its lower half m bears against the inner surface of the frame. IThe normal position of the bar m is that shown in 2, where the lug Z is interposed between the leg z' of bar 'i and the detent j and abuts the under side of a shoulder a on frame a; bar m may move downwardly to a limit afforded by the contact of its shoulder' mf" with the lower end of the slot n in which position lug Z is withdrawn from between leg i of bar c and the detent.
o is a safety lever for controlling the position of bar m. It is fulcrumed at its lower end on a pin p in the grip forming portion of the frame and at the back thereof, being shaped to correspond with the contour of the grip. Between the near side of this lever and the near wall of the grip portion of the frame the part fm, of the bar m is confined.` The lever o has a slot g inclined downwardly with respect to the path of' travel of the bar m, which has a stud o received by and approximately lfitting said slot. A
e is a spring coiled about pin p and having one end bearing against the lever o and the other against a stud t and normally pressing the lever rearwardly on its fulcrum (Fig. 2). Owing to the dispositiorlof the slot g relatively to the path of travel'of the bar m it will be seen that in the normal Aposition of thele'ver .elevated position;
The rearward movement of the lever ounder the influence of the spring s is limited by the bar m'which at this time abuts the fixed shoulder a, while the stud r and the lowerf side of slot g abut each other.
ln the present instance, inasmuch as the extension e of the cooking lever cannot obtain its cooking action by contact with the frame (as in the Searle and Lang patents above mentioned), said frame being cut away to accommodate the lever o, the lever itself has a rounded bearing surface 0 to receive the wiping contact of said extension.
Having thus fully described my invention,
` Whatl claim as new and desire to secure by Letters `Patent is t I 1. In combination, with a gun having a aid Bm'- is held in 'its g act, cam-fashion, on
'firing movement frame and a cluding train, means for blocking the ring movement of said train including an upright bar up-anddown movable into and ont of movement-blocking relation, to said train and having its upper portion laterally o set. the frame/having 'a guideway receiving said offset part of the bar, and manually actuated actuatlng means for and the frame side below the guide'wey con lining the lower part of said bar between them. A
2. In combinatiom. with a frame and having in one side of said frame guideways meeting at an angle to each other, a movable ring-meehanism-including train including a bar slidably arranged in one of said guideways, and means for blocking the of saidtrain includingsanother bar slidably movable in the other guideway into and out of movement-blockV ing relation to the first bar.
, n testimony whereof I aflix in presence of two witnesses.
