To all whom. 2'25 may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER WV. WVOOD- LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blaloclr, in the count-y of Dallas and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Combination clinker-Bar and Fire-Rake, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in combination clinker bars and fire rakes, and has for its object to provide a readily adjustable tool, which, while primarily designed for use in connection with furnaces, can with equally obvious facility be employed for other purposes.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will appear in the course of the following specification.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved clinker bar and fire rake. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a side elevation, partly in section, with the movable parts shown in different positions than in the other figures.
Referring to the drawings, which illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention, 5 designates a shaft or rod provided at one end with a slot 6 in which is pivotally mounted at 6 the tang 7 of a tool head 8. As shown, the tang 7 is preferably a centrally-arranged continuation in line with the tool head. Extending from the tool head and positioned one on each side of the tang 7 are prongs or fingers 9, which extend beyond the end of the tang and at their ends are beveled to a point. The main portion of the tool head extends beyond the shaft and is flat on one face and beveled on the other face. The tool head gradually widens from the prongs outwardly, and the outer edge is straight, as shown in Fig. 2.
Mounted on the shaft 5 is a tubular sleeve 10 provided with a longitudinal slot 11 near one end. Secured to the shaft 5 is a projection or pin 12, which projects into the slot 11. A short, transverse notch 13 opens into the longitudinal slot 11 near its outer end, and toward its other end, and on the opposite side thereof, another short transverse notch lt opens into the slot 11. The purpose of the notches 13 and 14 is to cooperate with the other parts in the manner hereinafter explained to lock the tool head 8 together with its tang 7 and prongs 9 in the positions shown in the drawings.

As illustrated in Fig. 2, when the tool head 8, its tang 7 and prongs 9 are arranged in line with the shaft 5, the tang lies in the slot 6 and the prongs 9 extend one on each side of the sleeve 10. The end of the sleeve incloses the end of the shaft 5 together with its slot 6 and the tang 7, and by drawing upon the shaft, the sleeve is forced up to contact with the inner side of the tool head, and then by rotating the shaft the pin 12 is positioned in the outer transverse notch 13 to lock the sleeve and shaft against relative movement, and thus firmly hold the parts in position.
Fig. 4: shows the tool head 8 together with its prongs 9 arranged at right angles to the shaft 5 and sleeve 10. This is accomplished by turning the shaft slightly to release the pin from the notch 13, and then sliding the shaft outwardly to uncover the tang 7 positioned longitudinally in the slot 6, when the tool head and prongs can be swung to the position shown in Fig. at. The notch 14: in the sleeve 12 is then brought opposite the pin 12, when the shaft can be turned sufficiently to place the pin in engagement with the notch to lock the sleeve in position. In this position the end of the sleeve will abut against the side of the tang at points on each side of its pivot point 6 and thus hold the tang, tool head and prongs firmly in position.
While in the foregoing description it has been stated that the shaft is moved with respect to the sleeve to effect the various adjustments of the tool head 8, its tang 7 and the prongs 9, it is apparent that the adjustments could be made by moving the sleeve with respect to the shaft. The free end of the shaft 5 is flattened and rounded at 15 and provided with an aperture 16 by which the tool can be suspended when desired.
In the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the blade portion of the tool is only operative and the device is employed as a clinker bar. When in the position shown in Fig. i, the prongs and the blade portion are set for use as a fire rake.
