Letters Patent No. 102,903, dated May 10, 1870.
IMPRovnD'BnIcK-MACHIN.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and$making part of the same.
To all whom itnay concern: 4 y Be it 4known that I, ROBERT WOLFF, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Brick-Machines, and thefollowing is declared to bea correctdescription of thesame.
' `This invention relates to a press in which clay, in a pnlverized state, is supplied into molds by a feeding and mixing-screw, and there pressed by followers.
My invention consists in the'pecnliar construction .'of mechanism that4 iscombined with the vmolds and y followers, so as to give the necessary pressure upon the bricks, and then deliver the same from the molds Vbythe action ofa slide' and apron.'
Figure 4 shows'` the levers and eccentric for moving thcmold-cover; and
Figure 5 showslthe means for giving pressure upon the followers.
The clay, in a dry state, is introduced into the cylinwhich is driven 4by power applied to the pulleys O Q. ThisV screw b thoroughly mixes the clay, and also forcesitalong to the delivery-trough D, and I-remark that if desired, thc clay may befslightiy moist, or be moistened by jets Ofsteam led into the cylinder A.
From the shaft Bthe gears I" and AP give motion to the shaft K, and from this thc cross-shaft I is actuated by the bevel-.gears X X.
At-the end of the trough D are the brickmolds E, there being any desired number in a range.: I have shown three molds, and inthe bottom parts of these molds are the followers F, Vthatm'e upon columns I 1 1, that are Connected with the cross-bearer 2, 'setat its ends in the leversGG. i
The levers Ghave their fulcrums upon `the stainlards H, 'and said levers and the followers F' are actuated in the manner illustrated in iig. 5.
The yoke M fis attached by a bolt, N, to the lever (iq-and said yoke .M is between two disks, L, through which disks pass the arbors'of the rollers 5 ,6 7.
. The levers G, being placed one `on each side of the bearer 2, and the disks L and yokes M corresponding, I am enabledtoobtain from the revolution of the shaft I a very `powerful but intermitted action upon the follower, and that with but little friction.
As the disks L (or roller-carriers) revolve, the rollers 5 `act upon the yokes and levers, to raise theyoke M and followers F suiiciently to carry the clay above t the lateral opening from D, and then the roller 6 acts against the inner upper part ofthe yoke M, to cause the followers F to press the brick with great force within the mold, and then thepressure is momentarily relieved as the roller 6 passes its highest point, in order that the cover V ot' the mold may be drawn back by the means hereafter described, and then. the
roller 7 acts to raise'the parts sufficiently to lift .the
bricks from the molds, and hold them 'while the slidecover V is moved forward again, to press'the finished, bricks olf upon the revolving apron IV, to be conf` veyed away for burning.A
The roller 7 moving downward as it revolves, allows the'followers to descend and a fresh supply of clay to v pass into the mold.
The cover V is fitted in slides above themolds E and-trough D, and the eccentlics O, levers I and I,
y moving upon the fulcrums R, are made use of to slide said cover at' the proper time, the cross-bar S ent-ering at its end-slots in the lev'ers Pi.

A rotary brush, to which a rapid movement-is given, maybe employed to spread the Oil. This brush is represented in iig. 1.

I claim as my inventiont. l1. The yoke M and rollers 5 6 7 and revolving shaft I, in combination with the levers G and followers F -of the mold for bricks or vsimilar articles, substantial/ly as and for the purposes specified.
2. The slide V, actuated as specified, in combination withfthe oil-receptacle T and molds E, as and for the purposes specified.
