STROPPING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. HAR u G- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stroppmg Devices, of which the following is a speclfication.
This invention relates to improvements n razor stropping devices of that class in which the stropping surface consists of a drum or drums and while the present embodiment of my invention is particularly adapted for stropping safety razor blades and especially double edged blades, the device is readily adaptable to other types of blades.
The object of my invention is to prov de a simple, convenient and effective stropplng device by means of which a blade may be stropped by rolling the drums along the surface of a table or the like and in which the pressure of the blade against the drums shall be firm and positive and under the instant control of the user through the handle by means of which the stropper is used to and fro, so that the stropper is more effective in its action upon the blade than devices of this class heretofore.
To this end, my invention consists in the novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 1s a plan of a stropping device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1, looking toward the right. Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1, and similar to Fig. 3 except that the positions of the blade and the handle are reversed from that shown in Fig. 3.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 5 is a razor blade which may be of any usual or desired type and in the present instance I have chosen to illustrate a blade of the double edged type. It will be distinctly understood, however, that while the device is particularly desirable for stropping this type of blade, it is not limited in its application thereto, but may be used for stropping single edged blades equally as well. The blade is mounted on and secured in any suitable manner to a suitable blade holder 6 which is mounted to rock about an axis in suitable bearings provided in a frame consisting of two side plates 7 7 connected to each other by shafts 8 and 9 upon which are mounted stropping drums 10 and 11, respectively.
Preferably, the blade holder is mounted between the drums and with its axis substantially in a plane containing the axes of the drums 10 and 11, so that as the blade is rocked to and fro, both sides of both edges of the blades may be stropped without removing the blade from the holder and reversing the same. To hold the blade holder and the drums, I provide a lever 12 having a handle 13, said lever having two arms 14, 14 pivoted upon the side plates 7, 7 upon an axis substantially parallel to the axes of the drums 10 and 11. This lever is connected to the blade holder 6 in any suitable manner to force said bladeagainst the peripheries of the drums 10 and 11, preferably by securing to each of the arms 14 a gear 15 meshing into a gear 16 secured to either end of the blade holder 6. By this arrangement, when the lever 12 is rocked one way or the other, the blade holder is thereby rocked in the opposite direction, thus, for example, assuming that the parts occupy the position Shown in Fig. 3, if the lever be thrown into the position shown in Fig. 4, the blade and blade holder will be moved into the position shown in Fig. 4. It will now be evident that since there is a positive connection between the handle and the blade, a down ward pressure upon the handle will result in the blade being forced against both of the drums and in this way great force can be applied so that while the drums are being rolled along the table or other suitable support in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 3, the downward pressure upon the handle is capable of direct control and regulation by the user to enable the drums to properly strop the edge of the blade. Thus by placing the handle in the position shown in Fig. 3, one side of one edge of the blade and the opposite side of the other edge of the blade may be stropped by moving the device in one direction, while the remaining sides of the two edges may be stropped by reversing the position of the handle to occupy the position Shown in Fig. 4 and.

One important advantage derived by the use of this construction is that since considerable force may be applied in this manner, a thin elastic blade may be caused to bear throughout both edges upon both of the drums, even though the drums may be somewhat misalined with relation to each ther and with relation to the blade holder.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire by Letters Patent tosecure is:
1. A stropping device having, in combination, a support, a drum journaled on said support, a blade-holder mounted to rock about an axis to carry the blade into and out of contact with said drum, and a lever extending transversely of said axis pivoted directly to said support and connected to said bladeholder to force said blade against the periphery of said drum.
2. A stropping device having, in combination, a support, a drum journaled on said support, a blade-holder mounted to rock about an axis to carry the blade into and out of contact with said drum, and a lever pivoted directly to said support on an axis substantially parallel with the axis of said drum and connected to said blade-holder to force said blade against the periphery of said drum.
3. A stropping device having, in combi' nation, a support, a pair of drums journaled on said support, a blade-holder mounted to rock about an axis between said drums to carry the blade into and out of contact with said drums, and a lever pivoted directly to said support on an axis substantially parallel with the axes of said drums and connected to said blade-holder to force said blade against the peripheries of said drums.
4. A stropping device having, in combination, a support, a drum journaled on said support, a blade-holder mounted to rock about an axis to carry the blade into and out of contact with said drums, a lever extending transversely of said axis and pivoted directly to said support, and means connecting said lever to said blade-holder whereby said blade may be forced by said lever against said drum.
5. A stropping device having, in combisaid lever to said blade-holder whereby said blade may be carried into and out of contact with said drums.
6. A stropping device having, in combination, a frame, a pair of drums journaled on said frame, a blade-holder mounted on said frame to rock about an axis to carry the blade into and out of contact with said drums, a lever pivoted directly to said frame on an axis substantially parallel with the axes of said drums, a gear carried by said blade-holder, and a gear carried by said lever and meshing into the first-mentioned gear whereby said blade may be carried into and out of contact with said drums.
7. A stropping device having, in combination, a frame, a pair of drums journaled on said frame, a blade-holder mounted on said frame to rock about an axis between said drums to carry the blade into and out of contact with said drums, a lever having two arms pivoted directly to said frame on an axis substantially parallel with the axes of said drums, and a pair of intermeshing gears one of which is secured to said bladeholder and the other of which is secured to one of said arms.
8. A stropping device having, in combination, a frame, a pair of drums journaled on said frame, a blade-holder mounted on said frame to rock about an axis between said drums and in substantially the same plane as the axes of said drums, a lever pivoted directly to said frame on an axis substantially parallel with the axes of said drums, and means connecting said lever to said blade-holder whereby said blade may be forced by said lever against said drums.
