Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented (lot. 24, 1911.
Application filed January 30, 1911. Serial No. 605,382.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVALD J. ENGMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at J ersey City, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Im proved Supply Valve for Candle Making Machines and Similar Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a valve of novel construction which is more particularly adapted to be used as a supply valve for controlling the conveyance of liquefied or similar readily flowing material into split molds, where such material is solidified. Such a device is used for instance in machines for making candles, soap cakes, or similar articles. The valve is so constructed that a permanent tight oint is provided between the foot of the valve and the contacting face of the mold, and that small irregularities occasioned in mounting or by wear are compensated for.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a vertical section through the valve, showing it applied to a candle making machine; Fig. 2 an enlarged longitudinal section through the valve and adjoining parts, and Fig. 3 a cross section on line 33, Fig. 2.
The numeral 10 indicates a tank below the sloping bottom 11 of which is arranged a heating chamber 12 that maintains the cast ing material contained in tank 10 in a liquefied state. From bottom 11 depends an in tegral cylinder 13 which is surrounded by the heating chamber and constitutes a valve casing. Bottom 11 is provided with an opening 14: concentric with cylinder 13 but of a diameter less than that of the cylinder, thereby forming a seat for a spring 15. Into the lower threaded end of cylinder 13 is tapped a correspondingly threaded sleeve 16 having a lower contracted or tapering section 17. The latter has a central bore 18 which snugly embraces the upwardly extending cylindrical flange 19 of an annular plate or foot 20. Between the flat bottom of sleeve section 17 and plate 20 is interposed a gasket or resilient member 21 that tends to force said plate against the upper faces of a'pair of mold blocks 22 forming jointly a candle casting recess 23. For permitting the ready removal of the finished candles, mold blocks 22 may be simultaneously reciprocated in opposite directions by suitably actuated shipping rods 24:.
It will be seen that by the means described, a valve of simple construction and containing a minimum number of parts is obtained. The cushion 21 forces plate 20 against the mold so that an escape of the molten material is effectively prevented irrespective of wear and of slight irregularities in the moving parts.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a cylinder, a sleeve tapped therein and having a perforated tapering lower section, a flanged annular plate engaging said section, a flexible gasket between the tapering sleeve section and plate, a valve seat formed on said plate, and a valve plug adapted to engage said seat.
2. In a device of the character described, a cylinder, a sleeve tapped therein and having a perforated tapering lower section, a flanged annular plate engaging said section, a flexible gasket between the tapering sleeve sect-ion and plate, a valve seat formed on said plate, a valve plug adapted to engage said seat, a stem on said plug, and an apertured guide disk carried by the stem and accommodated by the sleeve.
3. In a device of the character described, a cylinder having an upper perforated spring seat, a sleeve tapped into said cylinder and having a perforated tapering lower section, a flanged annular plate engaging said section, a flexible gasket between the tapering sleeve section and plate, a valve seat formed on said plate, a valve plug adapted to engage said seat, a stem on said plug, an apertured guide disk carried by the stem andaeconnnodated by the sleeve, and a spring engaging said disk and said spring seat.
4. In a device of the character described, a cylinder, a sleeve tapped therein and having a perforated tapering lower section, a flanged annular plate engaging said section, a flexible gasket between the tapering sleeve section and plate, 'a valve seat formed on said plate, a valve plug adapted to engage said seat, and having a flat bottom which is flush with the lower face of the plate when the valve is closed.
5. In a device of the oharacterdescribed, a cylinder having an upper integral perforated spring seat, a sleeve tapped into said cylinder and having a perforated tapering lower section, an annular plate having a cylindrical flange which is snugly embraced by said section, a flexible gasket between the tapering section and plate, a valve seat formed on said plate, a plug adapted to engage said seat, a stem 011 the lug, the diameter of which is less than that of the spring seat perforation, an apertured guide disk carried by the stem and accommodated by the sleeve, and a spring interposed between the upper seat and the guide disk.
