GEORGE F. CHAMPION, OF POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK.
UMBRELLA-STAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 5, 1914:.
Application filed September 24, 1913. Serial No. 791,597.
7 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. CHAMPION, a citizen of the United States, residing at Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Umbrella-Stands, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to umbrella stands,
and more particularly to the class of foldable umbrella stands or racks.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of .a rack or stand wherein the same can be readily folded when not in use so as to occupy the least possible space, and when unfolded will accommodate a plurality of umbrellas, canes or the like.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a rack or stand of this character which is designed to fold in a novel manner so as to be compact and occupy the least possible space, and also when hung upon the wall will assume a flat condition and on the unfolding thereof will have a neat and attractive appearance.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a rack or stand which is simple in construction, readily and easily folded and unfolded, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, and inexpensive in manufacture.
it-h these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a front elevation of a stand constructed in accordance with the invention, and folded. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the stand unfolded. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a similar view when unfolded. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, the stand or rack comprises a pair of spaced vertical uprights 10 carrying at their upper portions a housing 11, while arranged below the housing is a swinging section or frame 12, the same being hinged at 13 to one of the series of cross bars 14 which are united to the uprights 10, the section or frame 12 being designed to swing in parallel relation to the uprights 10 or to swing to a plane at right angles thereto.
Slidably fitted within the housing 11 is a shelf 15 which is provided with rows of holes or openings 16 adapted to receive umbrellas, canes or the like when the said shelf 15 is swung outwardly at right angles to the uprights 10, the innermost longitudinal edge of the shelf 15 being provided with guide lugs 17 which engage in slots 18 extending a greater portion of the length and formed in the end walls of the housing 11 so that on the shifting of the shelf 15 the same will be properly guided into and without the housing.
Formed in opposite end edges of the section or frame 12 are guide channels 19 in which slidably engage guide pins 20, the same being fitted in L-shaped brackets 21 fixed to the lower ends of vertical bars 22 which are connected to offset portions 23 on the shelf 15 at the remaining longitudinal edge thereof and at the outer corners of the. same by means of hinges 24 so thaton the raising of the shelf 15 the section or frame 12 will be simultaneously raised therewith, and when the said shelf 15 is lowered in the housing 11 the guide pins 20 will move downwardly in the channels 19 in the frame to bring the bars 22 close to the housing and in parallel relation with the uprights 10, thus folding the umbrella stand in a compact form as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The uprights 10 are suitably fastened to the wall of a room and fixed to the shelf 15 is a handle 25, while carried by the intermediate cross bar 14; is a latch member 26 which is adapted to engage the section or frame 12 when swung upwardly and inwardly on the folding of the umbrella stand to prevent outward swinging of the section or frame 12 when the umbrella stand is not in use, the handle 25 being used to raise the shelf 15 and also for lowering the same in the housing 11 of the stand.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is 1. A foldable umbrella stand comprising a support, a housing mounted upon the support, a reticulated shelf slidably fitted in the housing and adapted to be swung at right angles to the support, a swinging section mounted on the support below the housing, members slidably connected to the section and hinged to the shelf whereby on movement of the latter the section will be simultaneously moved therewith, and means on the support and engageable in the section to prevent the outward swinging thereof when folded.
2. An umbrella stand comprising a support having a houslng, a shelf normally hinged to the shelf, brackets fixed to the members, guide pins supported by the brackets and slidably engaging the said section whereby on the lifting of the shelf the section will be swung upwardly and inwardly toward the support, and means for locking the section in folded relation to the support.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE 1*. CHAMPION.
