Description
diluita gittataitni ii @finit TOWER THOMASSONpOF CALHOUN, MISSOURI.
Letters Patent No. 103,157, dated November 8, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-HULLERS, SHELLERS, AND FEEDCUTTERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom tnay concern:
Be it known that I, TOWER THoMAssoN, of Galhoun, in the county of Henry and in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Corn-Hnsker, Sheller, Hackler, and Feed-Ou tter.; anddo hereby declare that the following is afnll, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters ofi reference 'marked thereon making a part of this specifica-tion.
The nature of my invent-ion consists in the construction and arrangement of a combined corn-husker,
sheller, hackler, and feed-cutter, as will be herein-V after fully set forth.
In order to enable othersv skilled in the art to v which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the entire machine,` with the table or platform removed;
`Figure 2 is an enlarged side view ofthe wheel, with knives attached;
Figure 3 is a section showing the only alteration necessary to make a feed-cutter ofthe machine; and
Figure 4 is an enlarged section, showiiigthe position of the table or plat-form.
- A represents the frame of my machine, within which is` placed the sheller B.
I have not deemed it i-xeeessary to represent any particular construction of -the sheller,AA as it may be made in any of the known and usual ways. vW'it'hin the mainframe A is another frame, C, di vviding-theframc longitiulinally, in two spaces of nneqnal widtln'as shown in fig. l, the sheller B being placed within the larger of said spaces.
Upon the inner end of the sheller-shaft isa cogwhcel, I), which gears with a pinion, a, upon` a horizpntai shaft, running across the entire frame A.in
I its center.
On this shaft, immediately wit-hin the frame A,and
in the smaller space formed by the frame (l, is secured a wheel, E, on the outer side of which are secured knives bb. "lhese knives radiate from the center of the wheel ,and projectasuitable distanceV These .irons are placed one on each side of the wheel, in such a position that when the wheel revolves,
the knives I) b will come close up to the inner sides of said irons. l
Between the irons d d, on the saine side 'of the frame A, is hooked a table or platform, G, supported by hinged legs e e, and which is to be used as a chute for the ears of corn. It is to be placed in an inclined position, so that the ears of corn "will be forced toward the machine.
At each end of the frame A, on the same side as the above-mentioned devices, is a plate, f, provided with a number of upright sharp-pointed pins, i, i, which forms a hackle for removing the hnsks.
The mode of operating the machine is as follows:
An operator stands on each side of the table G, opposite the irons cl (Z. The corn in the husk is taken from the table G, and thelarge or butt end is put through the holes in the iron.l The knives bb then cut o i the end or hard portion of the husk, and the balance of the husk drawn through the hackler f i, when the loose ear of corn is thrown into the sheller Under the wheel E, extending the whole length of the frame A, is a sloping apron, H, which throws out from the machine the butt end of the husk after it is cutoff-hy the husker E b.
'When it is desired to use the machine as a feedcutter, the irons l d are-removed, and other L-shaped irons hare substituted. lhese irons have anelongated slot in their upright portions, as shown in iig..
3, through which the straw, &e., is passed to be cut by the knives I) b. Y v
' Having thus fully described 1n y invention,
\Vhat lI claim as new, and desire to secure by Leit-ers Patent, is-
1. The wheel E, proyide'd with knives l) b, and used in conibin'ation with the `irons d d, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
f2. Theslotted iron-vh, constructed and arranged as described, in combination with the wheel E and knives b b, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. v Y. A p 3. The combination of the frame A, sheller B, wheel E, with knives b l), angular irons d, adjustable platform G, and sloping apron H, all constructed, arranged,
and operating substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In' testimony that 1 claim the foregoing, I have.V
hereunto set my hand this 29th day of July, 1870.
TOWER THOMASSON.
