To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnri-i GRANQUIST, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Howboat-Propellers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to an llllproved manually operated propeller employed in connection with small working and pleasure boats; and the object of my invention is to provide a device of this general character of a simple and inexpensive nature and of a compact and durable construction, which shall be capable of convenient and accurate adjustment in position upon the gunwale of a boat, in a manner permitting the operator to propel the boat while facing the direction in which the boat is moving, and providing a means whereby the operator may easily stop the boat or turn the same to the right or left.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and finally pointed out in the appended claim, it being further understood that changes in the spe cific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1, shows a top view of a row boat provided with my manually operated propelling mechanism. Fig. 2, shows a transverse sectional view with parts .broken away, and Fig. 3, shows an enlarged broken detached detail showing the propeller in side elevation.
In carrying out the aim of my invention, I employ a central support, which is secured centrally within the boat by any suitable means. In the accompanying drawings I have shown a pleasure boat A, provided with a propelling mechanism embodying my invention. The pillow post 1, is provided with a securing base 2, and at the upper end has a journal bearing 3, of any approved construction. As shown more clearly in Fig. 2, this hearing 3, is provided with an oil cup 4. Secured to the gunwale of the boat are two similar journal bearings 6, 6,
the axes of which are in alincinent with the axes of the bearing 3. The upper caps of these journal bearings 6, are secured by means of suitable thumb screws 8, so that the caps of these hearings can be readily removed or attached. In connection with these hearings, I use two counterpart crank shafts l0 and 12, each having an inner hearing end 11, for co-action with the bearing 3, while the outer bearing ends 16, held within the bearings (5, give support to the paddle heads 13. As shown, each hearing end 16, has a stop collar 17. The heads 13, are secured to their shafts by means of a suitable pin 18, as shown in Fig. 2, and. each head is provided with a plurality of crosswise running apertures within which are slidably held the paddle bars 14, each paddle bar having a flattened tang 10, so that a slightly curved paddle 15, may be socurely fixed to each end of each paddle bar. These bars 14, are square in cross section, as shown in Fig. 2, while the apertures with in the heads are also square, preventing any rotation of the paddle bars and connected paddles.
As clearly disclosed in Fig. 2, the inner ends of the crank shafts 10 and 12, abut one working against the other, the oil cup 4, draining into the hearing at the point of union between these two crank shafts.
As shown, the paddle mechanisms are heldv very close to the sides of the boat.
In actuating this propelling mechanism, the operator grasps the handles a, and rotates the shaft in the proper direction. As the paddle bars 14, assume a vertical posi tion, they gravitate downward and this action is accelerated in view of the fact that the paddles are slightly curved, so that when they strike the water, they are drawn down. By synchronously rotating the shafts l0 and 12, in like direction, the boat is propelled in a straight direction. However, by rotating one of the shafts faster than the other, the boat is given a slight turn toward one side, and in reversing one of the shafts, a sharp, abrupt turn may be imparted to the boat. So also by reversing the movement of both shafts, may the boat be propelled backward, while at the same time it is capable of being easily stopped.
An incident of convenience to this arrangement for propelling boats, is that no cars are employed that are likely to become detached from the boat. In removing the upper caps of the bearings 6, the crank shafts can be easily removed from their bearings, when it is desired to house the boat. The device is further simple and inexpensive in construction, and both durable and efiicient in operation, and a boat equipped with a manually operated propelling mechanism embodying my invention, may be quickly started, stopped, or turned.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
The combination with a boat, of a pillow post carried centrally within said boat, oppositely positioned journal bearings secured to the gunwale of the boat in alinement with said pillow post, two crank shafts each having one end revolubly held by said pillow post the other end of each shaft projecting through one of said bearings, a paddle head having a plurality of crosswise running apertures secured to the outer end of each crank shaft, a plurality of bars slidably held within each head aperture, and a curved paddle secured to each end of each bar.
