Application filed August 6, 1913.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, 1WALTER SMrrH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Door- Stops, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in door stops and has for its object the provision of an improved construction of this character which is simple and efficient in operation.
The invent-ion consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a. door stop embodying my invention, shown in one position of use, Fig. 2, an enlarged vertical section of the door stop, Fig. 3, a section taken on line @#51: of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4, a section taken on line y-y of Fig. 2.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a casing 1 adapted to be attached to the lower portion of a door 2 by means of screws 3 as shown. An eccentric locking dog 4 is arranged within casing 1 in position to project from the bottom thereof to cont-act with the floor or to be swung upwardly out of Contact with the floor as indicated, s'aid casing 1 being slotted at 4 to permit of such upward swinging. Dog 4 is provided with trunnions -5 and 5 which fit within horizontal slots 6 extending from the inner edge of casing 1 and rounded at their ends to constitute bearings for trunnions and 5. Each of the slots 6 is closed by means of vslidable plates 7 which are provided with guide flanges 8 engaging the sides of casing 1 adjacent slots 6 as will be readily understood, said plates being inserted before said casing is secured in position on the door.
'Irunnion 5 carries a pinion 9 xed thereto and meshing with a vertically reciprocatory rack bar 10 carried by the lower end of a stem 11 projecting from the top of casing 1 and provided with a foot piece or pedal 12 as shown. A. compression spring 13 is imprisoned between a bearing 14 and a stop 15 on stem 11 thus serving to hold said stem and rack bar normally in elevated positions, said rack bar being so connected with pin- Speccation of Letters Patent.

The keeper 16 is fixed to a shaft 17 arranged in casing 1 and is so positioned that said keeper may be cau-sed -to contact with the periphery of dog 4 and hold the same in inoperative position as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, said shaft 17 being provided with an operating handle 18 for manipulating said keeper.
In use the casing 1 is secured to the lower portion of a door in position to permit operative contact between the dog 4 and the floor. As illustrated in the drawing, the construction is arranged to prevent closing of a door and for this purpose is secured to the outer side of the door with the dog 4 arranged as shown. Thus when the door is swung open dog 4 contacting with the floor will have its lower portion swung to the right as shown in Fig. 2 and thus ride easily over the floor to permit opening of the door. However, reverse motion of the door causes the eccentric portion of dog 4 to engage with the Hoor and thus automatically lock the door against closing. When it is desired to render the dog inoperative, the pedal 12 is depressed and keeper 16 shifted into contact with said dog to lock the same against operation. By the arrangement shown it will be observed that if keeper 16 is simply permitted to hang substantially in the dotted line position illustrated in Fig. 2, the engagement with dog 4 will be automatic thus dispensing with any manipulation of the keeper in locking the dog` in inoperative position. When it is desired to employ the stop as a means for locking the door in closed position, it is simply placed upon the other side of the door when it will accomplish the purpose as will be readily understood.
IVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat-ent is:
1. rIhe combination with a doorJ of an eccentric locking dog pivotally mounted on said door in position to Contact with the Hoor; a pinion operatively connected with said dog; a vertically reciprocatory rack bar meshing with said pinion and arranged to throw said dog into inoperative position upon depression thereof; and a spring normally tending to return said dog to operative position, substantially as described.
2. A door stop comprising a casing adapt-v ed to be secured to a door; an eccentric locking dog pivoted in said casing and arranged to project from the lower end thereof to contact with a floor; a pinion operatively connected with said dog; a vertically reciprocatory rack'bar in said casing meshin with said pinion and arranged to throw sai dog into inoperative position upon depression thereof; a compression spring arranged to l,hold said rack bar normally in elevated position; and a keeper arranged to hold said dog in inoperative position, substantially as described.
