FOLDABLE srmnc Hammock on cor.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 27, 191?. Serial so. a iases.
' citizen of the United States, residing at De troit, in the county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Foldable Spring Hammocks or Cots; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specificatioh.
This invention relates to a foldable spring hammock or, cot adaptable for usealso as a cradle and kindred purposes, and consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fullv set forth and pointed out particularly in e claims.
The object of the invention is to provide a swinging spring cot wherein the arrangement is such that the supporting braces extending from the base from which the cot hung, may be readily folded down in the plane of the base of the structure and the parts which suspend the cot from said braces detached therefrom and folded onto the cot, thereby reducing the whole to a compact form, provision being made for readily swinging the folded braces into position for use and connecting the cot supporting parts thereto. The above object is attained by the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which 2- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a swinging spring cot involving my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the parts folded. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in perspective of a portion of one of the base strips at the ends of which the brace rods are journaled. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view in perspective of a portion of one of the base strips and a portion of one of the brace rods, showing the manner of journaling said rod to said strip. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary View in ion: gitudinal section through the end of one of the base strips, showing the jointed connection between said strip and the brace rod. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the apparatus, as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is an end elevation of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is an enlarged plan view of the upper ends of two of the brace rods and the socket member which connects -said rods and affords means for attaching thepivoted link thereto from wh ch the cot issuspended. Fig. 9 is a side elevation of F 1g. 8. Fig-.10 is a transverse section, as on line l0-10 of Fig. 9.
. Referring to the characters ofreference, 1. designatesthe base strips which are located at each end of the frame, and which are adapted to rest upon the floor, or other sup porting surface. Each of said strips is provided with a. central longitudinal rib 2 struck therefrom to add the necessary strength and rigidity thereto. Crossing between the ends of the base strips are the base rods 3 which form the longitudinal members of the bottom of the frame and which at points therein toward each end are bent at right angles, forming the brace rods 4, there being two of said rods at each end of the frame. To connect the brace rods to the base strips in a manner to allow the free ends of said rods to swing in the arc of a vertical circle, each of the base strips is provided in the ends of the rib 2 with half round notches 5 (see Fig. 3), in which the rod 3 is adapted. to lie, and with the projecting fingers 6 adapted to be folded around said rod, as shown in Figs. 4: and 5, whereby tFe rod 3 is securely attached to the ends of t 1e basestrips in a manner to permit it to rotate, thereby establishing a pivotal con nection between the brace rods 4 and the base strips of the frame.
The upper ends of the brace rods are bent inwardly at an incline, as shown at 7,'so that said inwardly bent end portions are caused to lie parallel when the free ends of the brace rods are brought together, as shown in Figs. 8 and 10. The parallel end portions of the brace rods are confined in a member or fitting 8 having parallel sockets'whic h receive said endportions 7 and onto which said member is slipped, whereby the upper ends of the brace rods 4: at each end of the frame are detachably coupled to gether, and provision is made for suspend ing a cot or hammock from the socket members 8 through the medium of theeye or loop 9 formed at the inner ends thereof. Coupled to the eye 9 of each of the socket members 8 by means of a hook it) to swing freely therefrom, is a link 11-, the lower end of said link having a hook 12 which is closed around the bar of a looped bail 13, the loop of said bail lying in said hook 12. The free ends of the bail areprovided with hooks 1% which are closed around theend bar 15 of the cot frame 16 at each end of saidtime.
Patented na acne-as.
The frame of the cot 16 as well as the inclined brace rods 4 will be formed of spring material so that when a weight is placed upon the cot, it will spring downwardly and the upper joined ends of the brace rods will be sprung inwardly, as clearly shown by dotted lines-in Fig. (5.
a il'ording a swinging and resilient support for the occupant of the cot.
This structure is especially adaptable for camping purposes and mar be employed a porch hammock or as a swinging cradle. The adaptability of the parts to be reduced to a small compass. is of material importance in transportation, and the readiness with which the device may be set up when required for use renders it an apparatus of great utilit x When it is desired to fold the device, the socket members 8 are withdrawn from the ends 7 of the brace. rods, thereby releasing said rods and pern'iitting their free ends to swing downwardly to the position shown in Fig. 2, and by dotted lines in Fig. 7, the bentend portions 7 of said rods crossing the ends oi. the base strips 1. The cot frame is then.
placed within the center of the folded main frame and the bails l3 and the Connected links 11 and socket members 8 are folded inwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, thereby confining all of the parts within the area of the main frame, in which position they occupy but a comparatively small space. The jointed.connection between the cot frame and the hails l3 and between said halls and the. links ll. and between said link. and the so ket members 3, permit said parts to be.-
lolded within the, cot frame. as described, and is an arrangement which leaves said parts connected so that when it is desired to set up the apparatus, it may be readily done by swinging the free ends of the brace rods together and inserting the socket members over the parallel end portions 7 thereof. The incline of the end portions 7 of the. brace rods causes the socket members to bind thereon when weight is applied to the cotl'rame, thereby obviating the liability of the socket ll'ltllllltilfi slipping from the projeciing ends of the brace rods. Tho-length of the. socket members is such that when the parts are assembled, the ends of the cot frame will swing free of the brace rods. This structure not'only affords the cot frame a swinging motion in all directions but affords a vertical springing motion as well.
Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A device for the purpose set forth,com-
prising a base frame, end supporting rodspivoted at their lower ends to the corners of the base frame, their free ends being adaptedv to swing in the arc of a vertical circle, the upper ends of the two supporting rods at each end of the frame having horizontally extending portions, said horizontal portions of each pair of rods bein adapted to lie in contiguous parallelism, in( ependent socket members detachably fitting over the parallel end portions of the supporting rods, and links pivotally depending from the inwardly extending ends of said socket members.
2. A device for the purpose set forth, comprising base strips, longitudinally extending rods journaled to the ends of said strips, the terminals of said rods being bent at rightanglcs to form supporting braces which swing with said rods as the latter turn in their bearings, the upper ends of the brace rods having bent terminals which are adepted to lie in contiguous parallelism when the upper ends of said rods are brought to gether. independent socket members fitting over the parallel terminals of the up 61' end of the brace rods to lock them toget er and hold the longitudinal brace rods from movement in their bearings, and cot supporting links pivotally dcpemling from said socket members.
in testimony whereof, I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
