Description
H. G. NBWELL. PROTECTOR FOR TELEGRAPH AND TELEPHONE GROSS ARMS AND PINS. APPLIGATION FILED 00127, 1912.

Witnesse Inventor Attorneys UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY G. NEWELL, 0F LE RAYSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
PROTECTOR FOR TELEGRAPH AND TELEPHONE CROSS-ARMS AND PINS.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, HENRY G. NEWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Le Raysville, in the county of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Protector for Telegraph and Telephone Cross-Arms and Pins, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a device for preventing water from entering into the joint bet-ween the cross arm of a telegraph pole and the pins which are mounted thereon. By thus preventing moisture from getting into the said joints it is found that the life of these members is greatly increased. v
lVith this and other objects in view my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a. cross sectional view of across arm and pin, with my improved protector attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a side view of my protector. Fig. 3 is. a perspective view of the same. Fig. 4 is a slightly modified form of my protector. 'Fig. 5 is a top view of Fig. 4.
In the drawing, 1 is a wooden cross arm such as is commonlyused on telegraph and telephone poles, a wooden pin 2 being shown connected thereto and having the usually lowered portion 3 extending down into a hole in the cross arm, all of which is of the usual form and construction.
My protector as shown. in Fig. 1, is
placed between the shoulder of pin 7 and the upper surface of the cross arm and consists of a flat thin body portion 4, around the outer edge of which is the downwardly extending flange'5, said flange terminating in a knife-like or saw-tooth edge sothat the said flange may be readily driven into the wooden cross arm as shown in Fig. 1. The body portion 4 is provided at its inner edge with an annular .upturned flange 6 which flange has at, its extremity a knife-like edge which may alsodoe serrated'as shown in Fig.
3. By thus constructing the ,flange 6, it is readily driven into the wooden pin 2.
A somewhat modified form of protector is shown in Fig. 4,.in which the flange 6 is somewhat elongated and is adapted to fit over the pin 2. Its extreme edge adapted to be bent against and driven into the said pin.

upper extremity of sai My protector may be made of metal, but I do not wish to-limit myself to the same, neither do I wish to be limited to a protector whose body portion is circular, as the same maybe square or triangular and not depart from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim to be new and original with me is 1. A joint protector comprising a flat thin body portion provided with a centrally located aperture therein, a downwardly extending flange formed integral therewith and at the outer wardly extending flange formed integral with said body portion and at the inner periphery thereof, the extremities of said flanges formed with knife-like edges.
ture located centrally therein, a downwardly extending flange formed integral therewith and at the outer periphery thereof and pro- 'vided with a knife-like edge, an upwardly extending flange formed integral with said body portion and at the inner periphery thereof and provided with aserrated knifelike edge.
8. A jointprotector comprising a circular relatively thin flat body portion, a flange formed at the outer periphery thereof and and pro-- extending downwardly therefrom vided with a knife-like edge, said body portion provided with a circular aperture located centrally thereof, an upstanding flange formed integral with said body portion at the inner periphery thereof, the last mentioned flange bent inward and provided with a knife-like edge at its extremity.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY G. NEWELIL.
