Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the electrolyte absorbing performance of a fuel cell by constituting the second carbonaceous layer of a double matrix layer so that part of the second carbonaceous layer which faces to an electrolyte supplying groove consists of carbonic fiber paper containing no binding agents and holding micro particles. CONSTITUTION:Gas separating plates 6, which are made of carbon and have hydrogen-gas supplying grooves 4 and air supplying grooves 5 extending in directions crossing each other, are provided alternately over both surfaces of unit cells each consisting of a positive and a negative electrode 2 and 1 and an electrolyte holding matrix 3 so as to obtain a stacked cell. An electrolyte supplying groove 7, through which electrolyte supplied from outisde the stacked cell is fed into the matrixes 3, is provided on one peripheral part of the plate 6 so that the groove 7 thouches the matrix 3. The matrix 3 consists of a first layer 31 prepared by binding a porous inorganic micro particles such as SiC or ZrO2 micro particles with fibrillar fluorine, and a second layer 32 made of a carbonaceous matter. Part of the second layer 32 touching the groove 7 is a hydrophilic layer prepared by making carbonic fiber paper to hold micro carbonic particles.
