Description
本適用例にかかる表示装置用基板であって、絶縁層を備えた基板と、前記絶縁層上に設置された隔壁と、を備え、前記絶縁層及び前記隔壁は樹脂材料で形成され、前記隔壁は前記絶縁層より硬度が高いことを特徴とする。
上記適用例にかかる表示装置用基板において、前記絶縁層の表面には前記絶縁層を保護する保護膜が設置されていることが好ましい。
上記適用例にかかる表示装置用基板において、前記保護膜は開口部を有し、前記隔壁は前記開口部を塞ぐように設置されていることが好ましい。
上記適用例にかかる表示装置用基板において、前記基板は1つの画素に対応する1つの画素電極を備え、前記隔壁は前記画素電極を囲んで設置されていることが好ましい。
上記適用例にかかる表示装置用基板において、前記画素電極に電気的に接続された回路部が、前記基板と前記絶縁層との間に設置されていることが好ましい。
上記適用例にかかる表示装置用基板において、前記絶縁層は、平坦化層であることが好ましい。
本適用例にかかる表示装置は、上記に記載の表示装置用基板と、前記隔壁に支えられる透明封止部材と、前記透明封止部材上に設置された対向電極と、前記基板と前記絶縁層との間の前記画素電極に接続された回路部と、前記隔壁と前記透明封止部材と前記基板とで形成される空間に封止された電気泳動分散液と、を備えることを特徴とする。
本適用例にかかる電子機器であって、上記に記載の表示装置と、前記表示装置を制御する制御部と、を備えることを特徴とする。
本適用例にかかる表示装置用基板の製造方法は、基板に樹脂材料の絶縁層を設置し、前記絶縁層上に保護膜を設置し、前記保護膜の一部を除去し、前記保護膜の一部を除去した場所において前記絶縁層を覆って樹脂材料の隔壁を設置することを特徴とする。
(第1の実施形態)
第1の実施形態にかかわる電気泳動表示装置について図1〜図18に従って説明する。図1は、電気泳動表示装置の構造を示す概略斜視図であり、図2は電気泳動表示装置の構造を示す模式平面図である。
(1)本実施形態によれば、第1基材10には絶縁層12が設置されている。そして、絶縁層12上には隔壁5が設置されている。絶縁層12及び隔壁5はともに樹脂材料で形成されている。従って、絶縁層12と隔壁5との一方が無機材料で他方が樹脂材料である時に比べて絶縁層12と隔壁5とを高い強度で固定することができる。さらに、隔壁5は絶縁層12より硬度が高いので強度が高い。その結果、隔壁5に荷重が加わるときにも隔壁5が絶縁層12から剥がれて倒れたり潰れることを抑制することができる。
次に、電気泳動表示装置の一実施形態について図19を用いて説明する。図19は電気泳動表示装置の構造を示す模式側断面図である。本実施形態が第1の実施形態と異なるところは、保護膜13が絶縁層12と隔壁5との間に位置していない点にある。尚、第1の実施形態と同じ点については説明を省略する。
次に、電気泳動表示装置を搭載した電子機器の一実施形態について図20及び図21を用いて説明する。図20は電子ブックの構造を示す概略斜視図であり、図21は腕時計の構造を示す概略斜視図である。図20に示すように、電子機器としての電子ブック38は板状のケース39を有する。ケース39には蝶番40を介して蓋部41が設置されている。さらに、ケース39には操作ボタン42と表示装置としての表示部43とが設置されている。操作者は操作ボタン42を操作して表示部43に表示する内容を操作することができる。
(変形例1)
前記第1の実施形態では、電気泳動分散液15に白色荷電粒子16及び黒色荷電粒子17を設置した。白色荷電粒子16及び黒色荷電粒子17に代えて、赤色、緑色、青色等の荷電粒子を用いてもよい。この構成によれば、赤色、緑色、青色等を表示することでカラー表示を行うことができる。他にも、電気泳動分散液15に1色の荷電粒子のみを用いてもよい。
前記第1の実施形態では、1つの画素領域6に1つの画素電極14が設置された。1つの画素領域6に複数の画素電極14を設置してもよい。表示を細分化することができる。
前記第1の実施形態では白色荷電粒子16を正極に帯電させて、黒色荷電粒子17を負極に帯電させた。白色荷電粒子16を負極に帯電させて、黒色荷電粒子17を正極に帯電させても良い。制御しやすい帯電状態にしてもよい。
前記第1の実施形態では、画素領域6の形状が四角形であった。画素領域6の形状は円形、楕円形、多角形、円弧と直線を含む形状でもよい。このとき、隔壁5は樹脂材料から形成されているので隔壁5の形状は画素領域6の形状に容易に合わせることができる。
前記第1の実施形態では、第1基板2の画素領域6に電気泳動分散液15を設置した後に第1基板2と第2基板3とを接合した。他にも、画素領域6を連通させて第1基板2と第2基板3とを接合した後に画素領域6に電気泳動分散液15を設置しても良い。製造し易い工程順にしても良い。
前記第1の実施形態では、第1基板2に第1半導体素子7が設置された。第1基板2に第1半導体素子7を設置せずに画素電極14だけが設置された構造にしても良い。そして、直接画素電極14に電圧を印加する駆動回路を設けても良い。第1基板2の構造が簡単になるので、製造しやすくすることができる。

- 絶縁層を備えた基板と、
前記絶縁層上に設置された隔壁と、を備え、
前記絶縁層及び前記隔壁は樹脂材料で形成され、前記隔壁は前記絶縁層よりヤング率が高く、
前記絶縁層の表面には前記絶縁層を保護する保護膜が設置され、
前記保護膜は開口部を有し、前記隔壁は前記開口部を塞ぐように設置されていることを特徴とする表示装置用基板。 - 請求項1に記載の表示装置用基板であって、
前記基板は1つの画素に対応する1つの画素電極を備え、
前記隔壁は前記画素電極を囲んで設置されていることを特徴とする表示装置用基板。 - 請求項2に記載の表示装置用基板であって、前記画素電極に電気的に接続された回路部が、前記基板と前記絶縁層との間に設置されていることを特徴とする表示装置用基板。
- 請求項1〜3のいずれか一項に記載の表示装置用基板であって、前記絶縁層は、平坦化層であることを特徴とする表示装置用基板。
- 請求項1〜4のいずれか一項に記載の表示装置用基板と、
前記隔壁に支えられる透明封止部材と、
前記透明封止部材上に設置された対向電極と、
前記基板と前記絶縁層との間の前記画素電極に接続された回路部と、
前記隔壁と前記透明封止部材と前記基板とで形成される空間に封止された電気泳動分散液と、を備えることを特徴とする表示装置。 - 請求項5に記載の表示装置と、
前記表示装置を制御する制御部と、を備えることを特徴とする電子機器。 - 基板に樹脂材料の絶縁層を設置し、
前記絶縁層上に保護膜を設置し、
前記保護膜の一部を除去し、
前記保護膜の一部を除去した場所において前記絶縁層を覆って樹脂材料の隔壁を設置することを特徴とする表示装置用基板の製造方法。
