Abstract

Textile fabrics are printed with a paste having as essential ingredients a sulphuric acid ester of a leuco vat dye of the anthraquinone series, a thickener, an oxidizing agent, an oxidation catalyst and an aldehyde bisulphite, an aldehyde sulphoxylate or an alkali metal salt of such aldehyde compounds, and the dyeing is developed by steaming for about five minutes. The aldehyde compound inhibits the development of the dye during the first 1 to 3 minutes, thereby enabling the soluble dye to penetrate the fibre. In examples: (1) to (3) rayon or cotton is printed with a composition comprising the sulphuric acid ester of leuco Jade Green or dibromo Jade Green, urea, thiodiglycol, starch tragacanth paste, sodium carbonate, sodium bromate, Rongalite C and ammonium vanadate, and then steamed for five minutes; (4) rayon is printed with a paste comprising the sulphuric acid ester of leuco Jade Green, thiodiglycol, starch tragacanth paste, glyoxal bisulphite, ammonia, sodium chlorate and ammonium vanadate, and steamed for five minutes; and (5) the first example is repeated using sodium acetaldehyde bisulphite instead of Rongalite C.
