Abstract

Optical apparatus.- An anti-vibration support for optical observation instruments comprises a self-damping elastic support situated at, or as close as practicable to, the centre of gravity of the instrument, and means for angularly directing the instrument. The elastic support is composed wholly or partly of vesiculous elastic material such as sponge rubber in which the vesicles are not ruptured, or elastic balls cemented together, and may be in the form of annular or rectangular blocks, or columns which may be built up of discs cemented together and in some cases connected by horizontal diaphragms. A spring stuffed with self-damping material may form part of the support. In Fig. 1 the rangefinder R is carried on the upper part 2 of a mounting on the lower part 3 of which is a weight 4 whose vertical position can be adjusted so that the centre of gravity of the system lies in the plane 5, 6, which is supported by the upper surface 8 of the elastic supports 7 resting on the surface 9 of a rotatable member 10 carried on the fixed pedestal 11 of the mounting. The rangefinder is rotated about its longitudinal axis by means of a handle 14 and can also be rotated about the axis 12, 13 by the movement of the member 10. In another arrangement, Fig. 3, the rangefinder R is borne by members 17 projections 18 of which rest on the elastic supports 7 carried by the upper part 2 of the mountings.
