Abstract
A portable power supply which uses manual energy to be converted into electrical energy. Manual energy can be supplied in large quantities over a short period of time, whereas modern electronic equipment requires a small quantity to be available over a long period of time. In order to accomplish this the manual energy is stored in a medium such as a spring or an inertia wheel, which is then allowed to release the energy slowly into a generator to provide electricity. The electricity is then conditioned to the required voltage and current for either driving the device or charging a battery(ies) by a control circuit.
Description
PORTABLE POWER SUPPLY
This invention relates to a portable power supply.
Modern electronic devices require power supplies of relatively low voltage and current output. Power is generally provided either by means of a transformer, which can be integral within the device or an extemal unit, or by means of batteries, which may be disposable or rechargeable. In any of these situations the length of time the device can operate is govemed by the availability of a mains power supply or the capacity of the batteries. Use of the devices is consequently frequently inhibited as adequate power is not available. As an example a laptop computer can at the present time only operate for approximately two hours before the batteries become exhausted, and either need replacing or recharging from a mains supply.
This invention provides an alternative manually generated power supply for use where there is no mains power and/or the batteries are exhausted. It comprises a mechanical connection, a power storage medium to contain the manually generated power: a release mechanism to control the time over which the storage medium releases the power, and a generator to produce electricity If required the invention may also comprise a control circuit to condition the electrical output to specific voltage and current outputs compatible with the device to be powered.
As an example the mechanical connection could be a rotating handle acting as a winding mechanism to pass manual energy to a spring which acts as the storage medium. The spring is then allowed to unwind and turin the generator which produces electricity. An alternative storage medium could be an inertia wheel, and an alternative mechanical connection could be a ratcheted lever.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described for use as a portable power supply for a laptop computer. This is described in more detail by reference to the accompanying Figure 1 which shows a layout of the main components.
101 is a rotating handle connected to 102, which is a coil spring. Having been wound up by the handle, 102 is allowed to unwind in a controlled manner through an escapement mechanism similar to a clock (103), and in tum drives a generator (104). The electrical output from the generator is passed through a control circuit (105), which consists of a rectifier and a voltage and current control device. The output from this is then passed to the laptop in place of the existing mains transformer, and may be used either to charge the intemal batteries or power the laptop.
In order to use the portable power supply the output should be connected to the power input of the device (more specifically the laptop in the example above), and the handle is used to wind up the spring. On releasing the handle, the spring unwinds, powering the generator and producing electrical power. The generator output may then rectified and controlled by the control system in order to provide a power output compatible with the device.
