Abstract

A switch apparatus 100 for controlling an artificial light source comprises a lux level detector 102 operable to detect the level of light incident thereon and a controller 104 operable to control the switch apparatus to turn the artificial light source on if the lux level determined by the detector is below a threshold value, wherein when the artificial light source is turned on, the controller is operable to keep the artificial light source switched on if it determines that the lux level determined by the detector minus a lux level contribution from the artificial light source is below the threshold value, and is operable to switch the artificial light source off if it determines that the lux level determined by the detector minus the lux level contribution from the artificial light source is above the threshold value. Subtraction of the lux level contribution from the artificial light source provides hysteresis to prevent on/off cycling of the light source.
