Abstract

1470786 Making bags S R BOYD 9 Jan 1975 [10 Jan 1974] 1193/74 Heading B5D [Also in Division B8] A method of making plastics bags 1 each having a flap with spaced strips of pressure sensitive adhesive comprises supplying thermoplastic sheet material 12 in the form of a web and two laterally spaced layers each overlying a side region of the web to expose a central region thereof, the outer edges of the web and layers being united, applying to the exposed central region at least three strips of adhesive 29, 30, 31, slitting the central region longitudinally to form two adhesive strips on each side of the slit, sealing the material transversely at spaced transverse seals, and slitting the seals to divide the material into bags. As described plastics tube 12, e.g. of polyethylene has one wall cut by knives 16 to form the desired thermoplastic sheet material, the excess strip 18 being removed. Paper from a roll 13 is coated with adhesive from a bath 27 and slit into three strips 29, 30, 31 which are applied to the exposed region of the inner tube wall. The tube and strip 30 are then slit centrally to form webs 23, 24 which are welded by a heated bar 36 and severed by blades 38 to form the bags 1. The tube 12 may be replaced by superposed webs which may be joined at their edges in the machine or previously. The order of the operations described may be varied. The transverse welding and severing may be performed in one operation by heated blades. (For Figure see next page.)
