Abstract

1378971 Graft polymer contact lens E W MERRILL 8 June 1972 [9 June 1971 17 Aug 1971] 26701/72 Heading C3G [Also in Division G2] A contact lens made from a clear, cross-linked oxygen-permeable silicone elastomer having grafted on to each surface a thin layer of a clear, non-irritating hydrophilic polymer is produced by applying to the silicone elastomer a coating of the monomeric precursor of said hydrophilic polymer, either before or after exposing the elastomer to ionizing radiation. The monomeric precursor may be applied to a substrate, which is then placed in contact with the silicone elastomer surface. Examples are given in which (1) polydimethyl siloxane elastomer is cross-linked by ionizing radiation in a mould to produce a lens, which is coated with a layer of monoglycerol methacrylate/ polyethylene glycol solution, replaced in the mould and again subjected to ionizing radiation; (2) a poly (dimethyl co-vinyl methyl) siloxane gum is pressed between concave surfaces covered with a film saturated with aqueous glycerol methacrylate solution and the assembly is exposed to ionizing radiation; and (3) the gum used in (2) is pressed between glass pieces soaked in a glycerol solution of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and exposed to ionizing radiation.
