Abstract
1,172,002. Halogenating hydrocarbons- MARATHON OIL CO. 26 April, 1967 [28 April, 1966], No. 19298/67. Heading C2C. A process for halogenating hydrocarbons comprises mixing a hydrocarbon and chlorine and/or bromine to form a feed and contacting said feed with a zeolite catalyst at a temperature of from 50‹ to 250‹ C. The reaction is preferably carried out in the vapour phase on a continuous basis, and the amount of halogenation attained is controlled by varying the ratio of hydrocarbon to halogen in the feed. Preferred zeolites are the Y-type molecular sieves, which may when desired be partially or totally ionexchanged with cationic substituents, e.g. mercury, silver, nickel, manganese and copper. Examples describe the halogenation of propane and ethane.
