Abstract
Azo dyes of the general formula <FORM:1042300/C4-C5/1> where R1 is a phenylene group attached to the azo in 1-position and to the azoxy in 4-position and contains an alkoxy or hydroxyalkoxy group of not more than 5 carbon atoms in 2-position, which phenylene group may be further substituted, and R2 and R12 are each 8-hydroxynaphthalene disulphonic acid residues bound in 7- position and carrying a substituted amino group in 1-position, are made by reducing a nitro-azo dye of the formula R2-N=N-R1-NO2 with, for example, glucose in alkaline medium to obtain dyes where R2=R12, or by coupling tetrazo compounds of diamines of the formula <FORM:1042300/C4-C5/2> appropriate amino-hydroxynaphthalene disulphonic acids. The substituted amino groups in the hydroxynaphthalene disulphonic acid residues may be phenylamino, cyclohexylamino or p-toluenesulphonyl amino groups.
