I am a writer and maintainer of open source software, most interestingly of the 20-plus-year-old mail SMTP testing tool Swaks. I have long said that this software is not interesting to the vast majority of people, but to the people who are interested it is indispensable. While my software is free to use, my hope users who use the software in a commercial context might talk their employers into sponsoring development.
