With the nutils project online and under active development, the one thing most glaringly missing at this point is a project logo.

That I was not the only one to notice this omission was clear from a number of unsolicited suggestions, all highly appreciated, that were sent to me in the weeks past. Clearly the nutils theme inspires the designer in us. To leave everybody in on the fun it seems only fair to make this an open call for logos. I would call it a contest, but contests call for a jury and other impracticalities. Besides, as with science, I believe that openness and discussion lead to better results than blind competition.

So here we have it: I call on everybody so inclined to reply to this thread with logo ideas attached. You will need to use the github web interface to attach images. Don't worry about image quality or file formats: at this stage it is the idea that counts. If you lack the practical skills, but think you have a good idea to share then by all means do. Or if you see something with potential and have ideas for improvement, don't hesitate to build on other people's work. Be assured that by your shear participation in this list you will gain acknowledgement for the end result.

Some considerations. The project is called nutils short for Numerical Utilities. The alternative pronunciation "noodles" lends itself well for a logo, and I personally welcome artwork inspired around that theme. However, a really strong logo would combine the gimmick with a reference to the actual meaning. This is hard, and I don't have a ready idea of how to do that. But together we may think of something.
