Special Letters Spotlight: A weekly series highlighting unique correspondence from the Gerald R. Ford Special Letters series of the Gerald and Betty Ford Special Materials.

This week we’re featuring a letter to President and Mrs. Ford from Willie Mays, one of the most prolific baseball players of all time. 

Mays played for the New York Giants from 1951-1952. From 1952-1953 he served in the United States Army. After his military service he continued playing for the Giants until 1972 when he was picked up by the New York Mets. Mays retired from baseball in 1973 with a never before seen list of accomplishments. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979, his first year of eligibility, garnering almost 95% of the available votes. In November of 2015 Mays was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.

In his letter to President and Mrs. Ford Mays thanks them for his invitation to the state dinner in honor of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh. He notes that it was a night with a “historical atmosphere” and a “marvelous setting.”

President Ford and French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing exchanged state gifts following the arrival ceremony on May 17, 1976.

France gave an antique 18th-century printing press to the United States, which was set up to print copies of the Declaration of Independence. In return President Giscard d'Estaing received a bronze cast of a bust of the Marquis de Lafayette. The original sculpture, created by William Rush during Lafayette’s visit to America in 1824-25, was in the collection of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

Forty years ago today President Ford hosted a state dinner honoring President Valery Giscard d’Estaing of France. The visit included this exchange of gifts related to the American Revolution.

Good Friends Discussing Their Differences

After finishing their hazelnut mousse and coffee the two leaders exchanged toasts.

President Ford shared an anecdote about his first trip outside of the United States to Windsor and commented on how he enjoyed skiing in Canada. Although he did not mention it during his toast, his prepared remarks also included the fun fact that he and Prime Minister Trudeau were probably “the only two heads of government ever to be photographed on trampolines in the same year.”

In a more serious vein, President Ford noted how cordial relations between the countries remained even when discussing their differences. “We often say in the Congress that you can disagree without being disagreeable, and that is the way I think our relations between your country and ours has proceeded in the past, and I hope will proceed in the future,” he said.

From his position among the White House plants, this photographer captured a photograph of Giulio Andreotti, giving a toast to President Ford.  In addition to dinner and toasts, guests enjoyed a night including music by “Tony Orlando and Dawn” and dancing in the Great Hall of the White House.

Inside Betty’s Closet: Learn more about Betty Ford’s style as we highlight some of her favorite fashion designers and their clothes she wore as First Lady.

Betty Ford picked a dress by Frankie Welch for the first state dinner of the Ford administration. She greeted King Hussein and Queen Alia of Jordan on August 16, 1974, wearing this white crepe gown. Ostrich feathers trim the wrists and neckline. 

The First Lady wore the gown at three additional events: the National Symphony Ball the Shoreham Americana Hotel  on December 6, 1974; a Judiciary dinner at the White House on November 24, 1975; and a Chowder & Marching Society & S.O.S. Members Dinner on January 7, 1977.

The Fords invited Omar Sharif to a state dinner honoring President Anwar Sadat of Egypt on October 27, 1975. The Egyptian-born actor was seated at the same dinner table with President Sadat and Betty Ford. According to Mrs. Ford’s memoirs, at one point in the evening singer Pearl Bailey was trying to learn the words to “Lara’s Theme” from Dr. Zhivago so she could serenade Sharif. In the end Bailey persuaded him to join her on stage during the after dinner entertainment to sing “Easy to Love” with her.

Oscar de la Renta, 1932-2014

Betty Ford loved fashion and admired the work of Oscar de la Renta. The designer, then President of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, and his wife attended a state dinner honoring Chancellor Helmut Schmidt of West Germany on December 5, 1974.

“You don’t know the pleasure you gave Oscar and myself in asking us to dinner at the White House the other night,” Mrs. de la Renta wrote in her thank you note to Mrs. Ford.
