Hi. I'm a black girl with a platform here on Tumblr and I'm here to stand the fuck up for the person who got terminated and back up what she said with my full ass army of supporters.
Being anti racist is an ACTIVE process filled with CONSTANTLY facing stuff that you and your friends and your family do that's racist.
I recently met a friend here in Norway (FINALLY!) She's cool as fuck and so far hasn't done anything openly racist as far as I've seen.
Every time I tell her how I'm treated on a daily basis she is SHOCKED
And unfortunately that's a part of the racist world we live in too. Most the people surrounding me have a tendency to ignore me when I need help and all of them have a tendency to act shocked when I don't get the help I need. It's always a bad time or a bad favor. Something they can't do or can't do right now.
I'm talking to you, Nanna, and Nils. I'm talking to you Steffen, Sondre, Synnøve, and Sofie.
People who have ignored me, stolen from me, lied to me, gotten my hopes up only to ghost me, hidden behind "send me an email" and never replied. People who first complimented me, connected with me, but then vanished before we could actually start to get close
Black people around the globe are dealing with this shit.
And when you all start to understand that YOU are doing it, it's a lot easier to accept that your friends are also doing it. It's a lot easier to not be shocked. If you are capable of racism, everyone else is too. And guess what? You are. And guess what? Everyone else is too.
If EACH and EVERY one of us goes to war against our internal biases we can get past them. Stop pretending you are a "good person"
Just be a fucking PERSON and leave the GOOD for the improvements you will continue to make for the rest of your life
Because that's how long it will take. We all need to improve. Every one of us. Forever.
Pretending that you're "good" just means you don't have to do anything. That's how racism sits and breeds and continues. Don't let racism be comfortable with you. Challenge yourself to answer that fucking email. Send that fucking text. Invite that fucking person to your house and don't tell that racist fucking joke because it's not funny. Bring them for Thanksgiving. Break bread with people who don't look like you, act like you, think like you, or believe the things you do. And keep doing that forever
THAT'S how you beat racism. Not by being a "good person"
Get rid of the "good person" narrative. We're all just people trying our best. We get better. We persevere. We help each other.
