To explain, I haven't been checking tumblr as much because of exam season and I had to finish some school work during summer break. And also because I did fell out of interest in Big Nate for some time (Deltarune release). Will be posting some more soon trust!
Big Nate Head-canons: Dee Dee Holloway, Chad Applewhite
(Best girl and Absolute chad, evident in his name)
Dee Dee Holloway
- She use to be pretty shy back in lower elementary/primary school, but she later got into musicals and theatres, met like-minded people, and became more unreserved and outwardly expressive.
- She's an ENFP and likely an air sign.
- Although she isn't the best actress in PS.38, she's the most passionate and zealous about it, making her stand out a lot.
- Gossip girl. She lives for drama and drama of all aspects. She enjoys listening and discussing about the lives of other people, especially when something interesting is going on. She doesn't really consider the implications and effects of gossiping in the moment as she gets easily engrossed in it. Only after she said it would she get the clearer picture and would ask for the other person to keep it to themselves (which they would not bc that's how gossiping works lmao).
- Not the best with keeping secrets but if it is a really important one that has really serious effects if leaked, she would keep it in mind, but she'll likely let it out on accident. One canon instance was in "Big Nate: Blasts off" when she told Paige(her friend) about Nate's crush on Ruby. Crushes wouldn't be considered a deathly secret really but not something many would want to be widely known, which was what Nate felt.
- Takes responsibility for things. Dee Dee can be careless(not as much as Nate) as she tends to act on emotions and feelings, but she would take responsibility for her actions, and sometimes take the blame or take the blame as an accomplice, even if she's innocent, if it was someone she cares about(she cares about a lot of people).
- Has a few older cousins who works in the theatre and drama industry, including being actors/actresses, a part of production crew, and being scriptwriters. They are big inspirations for Dee Dee and she would overwhelm them with questions during family gatherings and holidays.
- B average student. Best subjects are English and Art.
- Apart from the main gang, she has friends and also is close friends with other students in school. She tends to hang out with the other theatre kids and art kids, but she's a social butterfly and practically gets along with most people.
- Although bullies such as Randy find her annoyingly dramatic, she's quick witted and most people like her, so she isn't an easy or convenient target.
Chad Applewhite
- No one hates this kid. Chad isn't popular but he is well-liked amongst his peers and teachers.
- Is an only child with two loving parents.
- Many people tend to have a soft spot for him because of his personality and cute appearance. Yes, some teachers and adults are biased towards him.
- However, it does get excessive and annoying at times. He does dislike it when people infantalize or underestimate him
- His grades are quite mixed, but they aren't anything lower than a C.
- His best subject is home economics.
- Has a lot of really good home-made goods in his home-bought lunches. His friends and some other kids would ask for a portion and he’d always be happy to share.
- Can contend with Nate in terms of humour. He's not class clown material but does have great delivery with his jokes.
Angie and Kelly redesign and rewrite cuz I feel like they were super underdeveloped (granted it was during the 90s and early 2000s so)
Angie rewrite/redesign
So for these redesigns, I want Nate's exes to have something in common with one of Nate's passion and each of their own unique edge. So for Angie, instead of her being the new girl who was super popular, she went to summer school for the same reason Nate did. She's known as that one art kid who every student goes to whenever an art project is involved. She spaces out a lot in class and she and Nate share the same disdain for school and a love for art. She's kind of insecure over her performance in school and prefers to keep to herself.
Also she's Indian because all of Nate's exes are white and thats kinda crazy to me. There was this one strip where Nate dreamed about him and Angie running to each other Bollywood movie style so I just. Ran with that. And instead of being dumped, Nate's first relationship ended with him and Angie just... losing interest in each other and ending things amicably.
Kelly time
Out of all Nate's gfs, I find Kelly to be the most boring and underdeveloped one mostly because she had the least amount of time on page and got done absolutely dirty. So I picked some strips involving her that I find interesting and expand on that.
First of all, she was introduced to the comics in a soccer camp, and in another strip she played football with Nate and friends. So I made her a tomboy who's super into sports. Second, out of all Nate's gfs, she butted heads with Nate the most, with her not liking Femme Fatale and thinking its ridiculous that he didn't want to wear figure skates. So in this redesign she's a really hot-tempered girl who fought with Nate a lot because of the whole P.S 38 - Jefferson rivalry. They eventually became friends and started dating by the end of summer. Out of all Nate's girlfriends, she's the liveliest and matches Nate's hyperactive energy. She's also really strong and never lets him forget it.
Unfortunately, thanks to their school's rivalry, a lot of Kelly's classmates got on her case for dating a student from P.S 38 and berated her for supporting him whenever their school had a match against each other. The pressure eventually got to her and she broke up with Nate (who absolutely did NOT take it well).
Saw your hc that daphne teases nate about his height and I find that super funny since nate's like 4'6"
GAH THX UU, I also hc Nate's insensitive about his height when people mention it (he's one of the shortest kids in their grade, other than Chad) XD but unlike Chad, he doesn't get called 'cute' for it (I mean other than that Brianna arc).
I guess now just make me realize how incredibly short he is to Francis. I find that so funny since Nate seems like the type to go outside and do recreational activities (where studies show that is help you height grow) more than Francis, yet somehow, the blonde is taller.
Question for Ellen: What student are you at school? What type/kind of reputation do you have? How do you find sophomore/school?
ELLEN: I’d say I have a pretty solid reputation. I’m the responsible one. Honors classes, extracurriculars, student council, community service—you name it, I’m probably involved. I get labeled as the “overachiever” or “perfect student” sometimes, which, yeah, gets exhausting. Like, sorry for being competent.
I try to be nice to people, I do—but sometimes I feel like everyone either wants something from me or they're kids who are just...weird. If people are like that, I just end up trying to avoid them as much as possible.
Sophomore year’s been… intense. The grades here matter now, so the pressure’s higher, the expectations are bigger, and don’t even get me started on group projects. I'd rather do individual work, because I could get more done during then. Don't get me wrong though, I love learning. I hate chaos. I survive on to-do lists and iced coffee. And honestly? I just want to get into a good college, keep my GPA intact, and maybe occasionally live a little without being called “uptight.” Is that too much to ask?
The fact that she's also working 2 part-time jobs(Dilly Burger & Babysitting) is crazy to me. Being a high school student, the amount of work and pressure she has is insane, this girl needs a vacation 😭
Can you do some adorable and romantic headcanons of Nate and Daphne?
Hang on *pull up my doc of all my headcanons* alright... get ready for a yap session:
- Nate still has the woven bracelet Daphne gave him. Even if he doesn’t wear it sometimes, he treasures it with all his heart.
- Daphne sometimes pretends not to care about Nate’s comics, but she actually reads them all and critiques the plot twists. Nate’s both insulted and weirdly impressed.
- With that, Nate draws her personalized comics where she’s the hero saving the day (or him). Daphne pretends to roll her eyes, but she keeps them all in a shoebox.
- Nate gets defensive when other guys talk to Daphne, even though he’s constantly bragging about his own popularity. Daphne laughs it off and replies with, “oh? jealous much?”
- Daphne sees through Nate’s bravado. When he’s feeling insecure or down, she’ll just bump his shoulder and say, “You’re not fooling me, genius,” and it works.
- Since Nate is pretty short, he gets very pouty when he realizes Daphne is this close to being his height. When she teases him by standing next to him on purpose, he slouches slightly just to make himself taller and denies it with a “What? I always stand like this.”
- The two tease each other a lot, but Daphne does it to Nate more constantly, but in a way that makes his brain short-circuit. Nate never knows if she’s flirting or insulting him (it’s both).
- On the weekends (maybe like every other one), Nate invites Daphne to “hang out” at Klassic Komix while he's on his intern shift. Daphne ends up helping him alphabetize issues and critiques the art.
- When someone pushes Daphne too hard during dodgeball, Nate immediately challenges them to a 1v1. He loses. Daphne ends up patching his scrape.

Big Nate Head-canons: Francis Pope & Teddy Ortiz
(Part of one of the most goated trios I've ever read/seen)
Francis Pope
- A Deadpan Snarker (sorry to say but see TV tropes for a definition 😭)
- He's a straight A student and on the honer roll.
- Although all his subject grades are within the A range, his best subject is Science and Social Studies.
- Stated in the novels, his dream job is to be an epidemiologist (Oxford Languages' definition of epidemiologist: a person who studies or is an expert in the branch of medicine which deals with the incidence, distribution, and possible control of diseases.)
- He's the more logical thinker.
- An ISTJ and possibly a virgo (or another earth sign)
- He's the academic one amongst the trio
- He tends to show tough love towards his friends and acts like an parental figure. He's somewhat like the mom friend.
- Always prepared for anything. He organises his things in all order arrangements possible(usually by colour and by the alphabet).
- The student who is a quiet shy nerd in front of teachers and other authority figures, but does a complete 180 when being with close ones(with his friends). Familiarity brings out a deeper side to one's self.
- (not saying he's two-faced, he's not. He's just more relaxed and comfortable around people he's close with)
- Although rarely, he has been caught by teachers being "out of character", which has led to some awkward moments. Nate and Teddy finds that absolutely hilarious.
- The lucky only child of the family and Nate(evidently in the novels), is jealous of that.
- He and Nate do argue the most amongst in the Trio because their personalities and traits almost always contradict one another. They do manage to make up and find a solution in the end.
- He and Nate chat through their window from time to time(neighbours).
- Has less detentions than Gina.
- Most introverted in the trio
Teddy Ortiz
- I see him as an Aquarius (Air-water sign?), also likely an ESTP
- He's the sporty one in the trio. He plays basketball, baseball, and football.
- He's a B average student.
- He has an A in PE and is within the A range for Mathematics(Both his parents are Math professors so he probably gets help from home).
- Literally the mediator and middleman between Nate and Francis. He hears out both sides and helps both parties out. In Flips Out, he and Dee Dee helped Nate find the camera.
- Does not like conflicts, which drives him to try and solve the issue instead of preaching for one side against the other.
- He is a middle child with younger and older siblings. He has a large age gap between his siblings, with his older sibling/s being seniors and/or college students, and his younger sibling/s being babies or in kindergarten and/or in the 1st or 2nd grade.
- Has a sweet tooth
- Easy-going and go-with-the-flow kind of guy.
- He's the most popular and social in the trio. Popular is terms of most people including the 'popular' kids know and like him, and having a positive reputation in school. Although Nate likes to talk to people, he lacks social awareness, making him well-known but not as well-liked compared to Teddy(Nate has the class clown, art kid, and detention kid type of reputation)
