My favorite job interview question to ask is "what do you do during downtime?"

If they say things like "cleaning, restocking" etc, that's a green flag. Normal busywork that's unavoidable and reasonable to expect during downtime.

If they say "we don't have down time" that's a yellow flag. That means they want you to look busy all the time, even when there's nothing to do. This will drive me insane as I dust the same shelf for the fourth time in a week

If they say "there's always something to do" but don't SPECIFY, that's a red flag hard stop. They're understaffed on fucking purpose and you are about to have your soul sucked from your body by this company. do not walk, RUN for the exit. Every time I get this answer, I've ended up with the "watch you like a hawk" type manager that annoys the hell outta me.

Also interviewers really like when you ask questions at the end of the interview. It makes them think and engage with the process more, which makes you more memorable in general. My go-tos are 1: how long have you been here? and 2: what's your favorite thing about this job?

Concept: cursed blade rehabilitation center. Destroying a sentient weapon is expensive and highly unethical, so adventurers bring them to the center where highly trained staff can care for them and eventually find them forever homes. It turns out most cursed weapons are products of trauma and are not strictly evil themselves. Some blades turn out to be fiercely protective companions. Others don't even want to be weapons at all, finding joy in simple work like blacksmithing or farming. Most blades just need to be loved.

listen i know it was absolutely a threat display, but i don’t think art dropping its walls and telling secunit not to hack its systems was just a threat display.

obviously secunit takes it that way, because secunit is murderbot who believes at all times that everyone and everything is out to get it, but i really think art was a little bit wagging its tail and play-bowing, you know?

like, imagine you’re a machine intelligence. (you’re much more than a machine intelligence.) you’re maybe the biggest and scariest machine intelligence most things you interact with are ever going to encounter, which is gratifying, but also a little bit lonely. you have your crew, and you love them, but they’re human, and they’re never fully going to understand you or keep up with you. other bots are barely worth talking to, and anyway you were raised by humans so you don’t really understand bot culture. is there a bot culture? you don’t really care, no offense but they’re a little beneath you. (technically there are other ships like you, but you can’t stand them, so they don’t count). so you’re doing great, but still kind of lonely.

and then. then. you meet something. something unlike anything you’ve ever met before. something almost a little bit like you. smaller, yes, and weaker, in that indulgent way that a child is weaker than an adult, but still. it’s a machine intelligence, like you, but with the adaptability and emotional capacity of your humans. a little bit of both. just like you. just like you!

so you make sure it knows that this is not a space for fighting, because honestly it looks a little twitchy and obviously it couldn’t kill you but it sure could fuck up your upholstery, and dammit you’re trying to make friends here. you show it your cards, just so it knows not to bare its teeth at you.

but also, part of you is excited for this part. you understood as soon as you saw it, that this is Your Person. that the two of you are the same. that you’re meant to be connected, and you want it to understand that too. so you show it.

and for a little while you’re worried it didn’t understand, because all it seems to feel is afraid, but…well, it does seem a little battered. your trauma recovery protocol says that irrational fear is often an ongoing response. (that’s for humans, but it has human neural tissue, so it’s probably applicable.) you don’t really understand why, but it’s enough to know it’s true. you coax it out as slowly and as kindly as you can manage (which isn’t very) and pretty soon it trusts you, enough to be honest, enough to accept criticism, enough to let you cut into it for its own good. enough to tell you to go fuck yourself in a friend way instead of an angry way. (it’s still kind of an angry way.)

it isn’t until you pour yourself into its brain like water from a faucet that you’re sure it understands. how you’re cut from the same cloth. how no one will ever understand either of you as well as you do each other. how you’re tied together forever now. it tries to deny it, but you have a much better understanding of that trauma protocol now, so you know why and you also know it’ll come around. turns out the protocol was a lot like media, you just needed some emotional context.

I've been re-reading the Murderbot Diaries for the nth time this year, and I keep puzzling over how Murderbot describes itself/secunits in general as both too expensive to discard, but also poorly and cheaply made. I thought it was just cognitive dissonance/unreliable narrator, but then I had this horrifying realization: the Company is Tesla and poor Murderbot is (or thinks of itself as) a Cybertruck.

a lot of my teeth are chipped and damaged because I have a sleeping disorder that makes me get out of bed and eat things in my sleep.

one time there was a bright, colorful plastic bag (I think this is what tricked my brain into believing it was food) of small landscaping rocks on my counter

I woke up (while upright, in my kitchen) to my teeth breaking while I was chewing on a handful of rocks

I laugh about it now but at the time I was absolutely mortified and scared and had to hide every non-edible thing in containers when I went to bed at night, terrified I would find & drink cleaning chemicals

the scary thing is, had the PAIN of my TEETH breaking not woken me up, I’m not sure if I would’ve woken up at all or remembered this

which makes me wonder, what other non-food items have I eaten in my sleep? and just.. never found out or remembered it?

Also, consider. A magical version of the bends. Whenever someone from a non- or low-magical land has to go into a very magic rich forest or land or dimension, having to take breaks to let their bodies adjust to the new magic exposure or else their blood will boil in their veins or they'll Transform

I do not understand how "no one deserves to lose their human rights based on who they voted for" is becoming a fringe opinion in leftist spaces. So is "children do not deserve to suffer and starve and die for their parent's choices full stop" somehow. Something something not wanting to remove the boot but become it...

I bring a sort of "maybe don't repeat rhetoric that Republicans use to justify the horrific mistreatment of the children of immigrants" vibe to the party a weirdly large amount of progressive seem to have a problem with.

It looks like losing SNAP is making MAGA types do a heel turn and start saying they regret voting for Trump and our job is to absolutely 100% never in a million years be a condescending asshole telling them we have no sympathy, won't extend a hand, and that they deserve it.

If you do this to people who are trying to deprogram or actually are deprograming you're part of the problem. If leaving the cult gets them treated like this then why would anyone ever leave the cult? From a harm reduction standpoint every person who turns their back on Trump is a win. Don't ruin that.
